    Hey guys,

So i made my first game and have been trying to get the word out. But advertising about that is not what this thread is about!

Take my scenario, a small developer, with a very limited/no advertising budget. I see many people like me, and they all seem to 'spam' forums, and clog up my twitter every hour with the same post about their game.

Its so bad I don't even bother to click the links anymore!

I know that most of your would rather just check the top 50 games and find out whats good that way, but we need to get the word out to get up there in the first place!

I have 2000+ followers on twitter, and I definitely wont keep them if I do what other developers do! But at the same time i DO need to tell people about my game/apps.

So just an open question, how would you like to be approached about a new game release?

Is it considered that bad to tweet about your game? If I follow a developer, it's because I want to hear updates from them about their games. It's true that I don't need to hear every time they change the slightest thing about the game, but getting the word out to your followers seems pretty legitimate to me.

Yeah i don't really mean tweeting is bad, but tweeting the same over and over probably is going to get you unfollowed pretty quickly.

I guess its slightly different for me, as the followers I have are not only because of my game. So i'm tweeting to them about something they might not want to hear about. That means the threshold for annoyance is a lot lower than if you followed just to hear about the game.

I guess maybe i'm looking for better ways of getting exposure that users would enjoy rather than spamming them with news they probably don't want over and over.

Its sad that the whole 'free app a day' idea (eg faad website) has become commercialised too. I would happily give away 50k copies to see if people enjoy it or not.

I don't unfollow anyone, I just start ignoring Twitter completely :p

I don't consider it to be like Facebook or something where you can have a serious discussion, it's just a dumping ground for random pointless comments and links to stuff that occasionally happens to be interesting. I visit it once in a while to scan for news I might like, then forget about it for another fortnight or so. You could make 100 tweets within a week and I wouldn't really notice.

Yea I use it mostly for contests and such. my friend found this hilarious tweet from soulja boy dissing JB. It was like... 1st tweet: JB is a faggot. 2nd tweet: Sorry I didn't mean it. But he does look like a girl
lol. sorry for getting off topic

But why don't you make another twitter escpecially for the game and ask everyone to follow that one to hear things about it? Maybe ask them once a day to follow that one for a week or so (at different times in the day so everyone has a chance to see it). Then when you get enough followers on the new one, you could do a retweeting contest ie.10$ itunes for whoever comes up with the tweet (getting people to follow you and about the contest) that gets the most retweets.... or some kind of twitter/facebook (facebook=<3 twitter=eeh for me...) contest that gets you attention. Yes... definitely do facebook advertising too....

I don't follow game developers because they are sluggish to tweet only when there's new update of their games. Your game must have been put on your bio, I think that's a good way to let people know your game better than tweet them over and over.

I find twitter to be a good marketing tool. But it depends on how you tweet as well. I am quite a twitter fan but even I sometimes unfollow people who do not give me info for what i followed them for.

Instead of updates try many different trends, news, trivia. 2000+ followers is no joke. you can certainly market your product and get a lot out of it.

Hmm thanks for the tip. I haven't tried the whole trending route yet. I'll see how that works.

stonery: my twitter username is @base2solutions

I also do electronic design and networking, which is where most of the followers have accumulated from. I've only just joined twitter but used friends and customers to get follows. Now they're all waiting for something interesting from me :p

If I don't say much they won't unfollow me yet, as I wont be cluttering their twitter feed. But if i do say something I better make it interesting :p

Maybe announce your game here on TA, hold a small contest (I.e, whoever gives us the best name for our game gets a $10 iTunes gift card... Etc...) and have a Q&A session.
