My usual machine is an iPhone4, which is min-spec or worse for a lot of games these days.

Temporarily, I've borrowed an iPad Air to do some testing for my app

While I've got it, I also want to take advantage of the gaming opportunities it opens up.

I've played The Room and The Room Two, and absolutely loved them.

What games would you recommend which are high-end device only?

Ideally something short-and-sweet like The Room as I only have it for a week or so.

    Bioshock
    Deus Ex The Fall
    XCom
    Republiqué
Edit: Didn't read the 'short and sweet' stuff, then go for Republiqué only

You should try battle supremacy. Its flawless on ipad air. Same to all the sky gambler games.

Battle supremacy runs smooth and looks gorgeous on my iphone 4, I can only imagine it on iPad Air.

Republique looks pretty awesome - I'll give that a whirl. Thanks.

EPOCH.2 takes about 5 hours to complete the story i believe, but could get longer if you're trying to farm for high end stuff too early. Getting everything and completing other modes can take it up to 15-20 depending on your style and skill. ;)

Here are some of the short'n'sweet games that look fantastic as well:

    EPOCH.2
    KingHunt
    Dodo Master
    Hellraid: The Escape
    Star Horizon
    Minigore 2
    The Walking Dead
    The Wolf Among Us

Here are freemiums that have fantastic visuals since you might not be willing to spend much as you only have limited access to the Air:

Abyss Attack - this can be premium if you buy the permanent IAPs.
Dead Effect - freemium now, but the balance is still premium. 5 to 10 hours to complete story mode
    Bloodmasque
    Despicable Me Minion Rush
    Iron Man 3
    Infinite Warrior
    Verticus
    Overkill 2
Arc Squadron (the new one is freemium i believe)
    Smash Bandits

A lot of these games look pretty damn good on my iPhone 4s and iPad 3 as well. If you want ones that specifically look better on more recent hardware, then I beleive Infinity Blade 2 and 3 and Asphalt 7 at least have higher resolution on newer devices.

Some of my favourite games to play on iPad are those which will run on other devices, but with stunning graphics that really pop on that big retina display.

    For example:
Rayman Jungle Run and Fiesta Run
    Monument Valley
    Device 6

Infinity Blade 3 is currently still the King of Graphics in iOS games
The graphical fidelity and lighting effects in Ipad Air is superb
