  1. Hey there,

Started early design on my next game and wanted to inquire about your preference on portrait or landscape gaming for a RPG/Strategy game using touch and drag (for map scrolling purpose) controls?

I'm tempted to give a shot at portrait for this one.

    Thanks.

Always landscape for me. I've played a few portrait games, but every single time I think "Shoulda been landscape...".

It depends on the game mechanics. In general I prefer landscape mode but for some games (like Cavern or QuestLord) portrait mode works surprisingly well. I could see Dungeon Plunder working well with a portrait option (with some tweaks to combat ui). I'll vote landscape but it's hard to say without more details. Best case scenario allowing either portrait or landscape would be ideal.

Landscape orientation , no doubt. I use portrait only with pinball applications to see whole table, others from that 99 % of time when using iPad I'm in landscape mode.

Landscape by habit of preference if it's an rpg/strategy. It would not matter if you can be smart about portrait, but I don't think any dev would bother optimizing two orientations. :)

Landscape. It gives you a feel of more field of vision into the game.

Agreed - it gives you more of a "sense" of being in the game. Plus, as has been mentioned, the addition of space is a big deal in terms of having good controls/UI. I've seen "simpler" game mechanics - like Dungeon Raid - be perfectly fine in portrait, but landscape for RPGs for me. That said, I wouldn't go "eugh! portrait mode!" for an RPG unless there were other problems (like aforementioned control or UI issues).

I think landscape for almost all games, really. It just feels more natural.
