The last piece of your favorite cake is on the table ready for your undivided attention, when you notice a hungry horde of insects of all shapes, sizes and colors making a beeline for that same slice! This is the premise of Critter Quitter, the new game from the latest independent developer to enter the AppStore fray, Impulsis.

While I am not a big fan of the “whack a mole” type of games, Critter Quitter takes this basic concept and sets the bar very high into its own stratosphere. Varied numbers of insects creep, fly or zip to your favorite consumable item (gamers can choose from cake, pizza or an apple, for you health nuts). Each insect has different characteristics that differentiate one from the other and, as a result, may require a different tactic of elimination. While one type of insect can be destroyed by a singular tap, another may take two. While one type of insect can be crushed, another must be swiped away. While one insect may circle in flight before diving in, another may explode on touch destroying nearby prospective culinary thieves.

With each creature’s demise, you accumulate their "bug juice" which you can use to purchase any number of power-ups, ramping up your pest control weaponry and quickening your assault against the persistent and pesky bugs out to devour the only item that can satiate the grumbling rumbling in your stomach. The combination of each insect’s attack-mode characteristic and the availability of various power-ups make for some fast and furious strategics on the fly.

The animated cartoony artwork breathes life into the deviously cute dervishes, making for some slick, entertaining visuals that the entire family can enjoy. The animation runs like “buttah” on my iPad2 and chugs at a favorable pace despite the sometimes maniacal onslaught the hordes of bugs demand. The developer smartly makes use of the extra real estate the iPad provides as they come in from any number of angles, zeroing in on your cherished morsel.

All in all, Critter Quitter made for some challenging but refreshing gameplay requiring some quick thinking and good hand-eye coordination. For its first-ever creation in the highly competitive AppStore market, Impulsis has gotten a strong start right out the gate.

    Good stuff, indeed!

    Five Out of Five Stars!

I think ColeDaddy summed it up nicely and while the game offers IAPs for Bug Juice credits, you really can clear the game with just your in-game earnings. Worth noting, for each level you complete in succession, the ending juice is multiplied by an additional +5%/level (2 would be +10%, 3 would be +15%, etc.) which means you'll come off better trudging through progressive levels than replaying the last one in search of some perfect result.
