Heading out on vacation on Friday and would like to load my IPad 2 with some movies. Which movie player is the best? My stuff will be mainly in .avi format. Thanks!

    Using AV player from start
Plays everything that I throw at it
Plays all common formats including XVID,AVI,WMV,RMVB,ASF,H264,MKV

    Couldn't recommend it more:D

Could you provide a link? I searched it on iTunes and came up with zilch.
    "AV Player Start"
    "AV Player"
    "AVPlayer"

    I recommend trying

    Azul media player
    -Supports all subtitle formats
-Can change audio tracks now since the last update!

    rushplayer
-Has the BEST video playback in the appstore but lacks support for some popular subtitle formats
-Use this if you don't require subtitles or audio track switching functionality.

    AV Player
    - Decent media player
    - Doesn't support all subtitle formats
    - Cant change audio tracks( correct me if I am wrong)
    - Seems to be Azul media player's poorer step brother/clone

    Aceplayer
-Only player that lets you manually choose both subtitle and audio tracks
-doesn't utilize the 2 cores of the ipad 2 i think
-Free! at least it was when i downloaded it

I just tried Gplayer @@. I think I might have found my favourite movie player after burning through 7-8 of them in the appstore.

Yes AV player runs decently..but azul, gplayer and rushplayer have better video playbacks. ( at least that's what I felt when I played my 720 p mkv files !)

You may not have experienced lagginess, but I have in certain instances. 'time skips' for really large files triggers this and also results in some pixelation/distortions for a while as the decoder struggles to keep up.

The inability to manually select audio/subtitle tracks is also a big turn off for me. In addition , I often see flickering subtitles probably either because the subtitle format isn't supported or AVplayer has problems loading multiple/parallel subtitles.

Well that's my experience with AVPlayer HD from a few months back though. It might have improved..maybe. lol. But I never felt the need to go back to using it after trying the other video players I have purchased.

^ You need to go to the bottom of the Apps page on your DEVICE, not the Apps folder in iTunes.

So if you experienced it, then everyone else will do as well? Explain it to me then why is it working perfectly for me. You shouldn't generalize that much.

Everyone plays different video files of different sizes and encodings? >.>

MKV/video containers contain a myriad of different video encodings and such. The internal decoders of these players all differ in their abilities to render and display these videos. if AVplayer has been working fine for your videos, that's all good and well, no need for you to go looking for alternatives.

Forgive my generalization...but I am certainly not going to go into the trouble of hunting down and posting all the different encodings/subtitle formats that ran smoothly/loaded properly or what not here.

This is my experience as someone who has a large assorted collection of video files and tried both AVplayer and the other video players listed above. Why don't you give ...say..gplayer lite a go? =p

OK, Gplayer Lite seems pretty neat so far. Will have to test it with subtitles, etc. Paying version removes the blue bar at the top, though, right? I assume that that's were advertisements are supposed to go, though I haven't seen any.

    Ran into another snag:

So, how do I make subtitles work on Gplayer? I have an Italian film to which I separately downloaded English subtitles in .srt format. On PC they work if the file is in the same folder as the movie file.
With Gplayer, I can't transfer a whole folder, but have to transfer .avi and .srt separately and subtitles don't work. What am I doing wrong? Or does it only work in the full version of Gplayer (I am still testing Lite)? TIA.

I watch A LOT of avi's on my iPad 2 and I've tried all the Video Player apps out there.

Azul is the best by FAR.

Just buy Azul - job done!

well.. Azul player needs to allow manual selection of embedded subtitles before I will consider using it again.

I think most people have their movie files in 720p .mkv format.

Sorry to ressurect an old thread, but just wondering what people considered to be the best media player these days?

I was using AcePlayer but it's not been updated for the iPhone 5 screen and it could never handle 720p MKV files very well...

For my app, just make sure both movie and subtitle has the same filename.
    E.g. Movie.avi, Movie.srt
