Acclaimed for its more complex and challenge strategy gameplay when released back in 1996, The Bitmap Brothers Z - now called Z: The Game - is being remade.

The project is a collaboration from licence owner The Bitmaps, and two of the original developers Tony Kavanagh and Peter Harrap (of Monty Mole fame).

It's promised that the game's tongue-in-cheek humour and addictive gameplay will be bought over intact, although the controls and interface have been radically overhauled to handle touchscreen devices.

    Prepare for service

Z: The Game will be available on a range of devices from iPhone and iPad to Android, BlackBerry PlayBook and PC and Mac.

"We're thrilled to be working with The Bitmap Brothers on the fantastic Z: The Game," said Tony Kavanagh, MD of Kavcom.

"Fans of this classic strategy title are in for a real treat - everything is in there, from the terrific comedy cutscenes to the frantic multiplayer mode, and with a much friendlier, intuitive interface. This is going to be the definitive version of Z."

More details, screenshots and release dates will be announced shortly.

Same here, bought Speedball instantly and then a week later they dropped the price a ton. Normally its the other way round ! So i'll be waiting on this one.

Must admit i cant wait for Chaos Engine which i hope they'll do after Z

Some screenshots here, sourced from kavcom.co.uk - the devs site. It definitely has the same feel as the original!

These are all iPad screenies, but I'd imagine the iPhone won't be too different:

I thought two different companies are doing the Bitmap games.

The one that did Speedball are the ones doing Chaos Engine.

    And another company doing Z.

So, I would not expect the same price structure of Z compared to Speedball. Just thought that this needs to be clarified.

Good point, didnt realise that. Z was a great strategy game dont get me wrong but i wasnt a huge fan of it in the 90's on my Amiga. But Chaos Engine ! Cant say it enough ! Really really want to get hold of that

The Chaos Engine is one of the best games from the Amiga years... the art on that is superb.

I worked for a company called Crawfish Interactive a lot of years ago and I was basically hired to convert The Chaos engine to the GBA. We only had one level up and running but the game worked really well on a handheld device. Unfortunately Crawfish went out of business so the game was never completed.
