I am trying to get ideas and insights into spreading the word about my new game and I wonder if the title makes people run for the hills because it rhymes with "Flappy". What do you think? I think it may go both ways. I, for example, seeing that title somewhere on the main site, would probably assume it's another Flappy Bird clone. And since I'm not a fan, I wouldn't click to check it out. There are, however, fans of all possible Flappy copies, who might check your game out. The question is - what happens then? Will they download it, or say "Nah, not a Flappy clone. Move along."? It also depends on what kind of attention you want to draw to your game, as you didn't really specify if you would like that bit of confusion, or not. Best regards, P.
Or worse, imagine they thought they'd get a Flappy clone with a somewhat funny twist, one that's worth the download, and get served with a game that isn't like that. Is there a chance some may cry foul because that game, there, used a similar term in its title to lure people and "sell" them something totally irrelevant? I see Landing in a city. CITY LANDER.
I definitely do not want to trick Flappy fans. The name was inspired by Flappy because that game inspired me to try a ad-based revenue game for the first time but then... The name really grew on me because it's an accurate description of the gameplay. The game is best played by tapping the buttons to make fine adjustments to land accurately. The name is fun, descriptive and I like it. It may however be stunted by the Flappy phenomenon.
I have updated the dev diary with entry number 5 about game physics and tricks. We hope to submit this week!
I struggled with this very issue myself with my own game. First, for the record my game is nothing like Flappy Bird, but because it involves Dogs and Clouds it made sense to name it Cloudy Dog. In fact, I didn't even see the similarity until someone I was talking to about the game said "is it a Flappy Bird clone"? My world shattered and I was crushed. Because my goal is to try to establish a new genre vs squeeze out every download I can, I changed the name.
