Looks like this is going freemium permanently with an ad on the main menu. Kind of sucks for those who paid for it and wish the dev could have implemented it differently, but could be worse. At least he's being upfront about it. For newbies, grab it. One little ad sounds like a good deal for a great game. andsoitgoes Well-Known Member Jun 30, 2010 2,673 58 48 In a van, down by the river! #2 andsoitgoes, Aug 30, 2013 Devs really need to come up with something better for paying users, it's irritating to force this kind of change without handling those who have paid a significant amount of money for the game. I've felt it many times after a game that I purchase has gone free. However the developer has only sold several thousand copies of this game. He doesn't have the resources to support multiple versions of the game and he probably needs to turn a profit to support himself since this is his livelihood. awp69 Well-Known Member Oct 30, 2009 8,249 0 36 Greenville, SC #5 awp69, Aug 30, 2013 "Several thousand" is a hell of a lot more than many other devs who have done this type of thing. There are apps that get far less. So even though the change sounds minor, I can't say I'm entirely sympathetic. Why not run a temporary sale first? ScotDamn Well-Known Member Patreon Silver Jul 8, 2013 1,990 0 36 Wireless Sales Happy Daddy https://twitter.com/ScotDamn #6 ScotDamn, Aug 30, 2013 Totally agree. And if the dev has only sold a few thousand (which doesn't seem too bad) that doesn't mean that the dev can't give the original paying customers an ad free version or a code to remove ads. It's really bad form. jeffyg3 Well-Known Member Mar 22, 2010 1,251 0 36 #7 jeffyg3, Aug 30, 2013 That really sucks for the people who supported it and bought it. Though, to be fair for those who paid money to download the game with the thought of getting a premium title, the developer really should release an ad-filled version of the game. This has happened before on a few apps I've paid for, and since then never supported the developer in the future by buying their later apps. It's crappy when an app doesn't do as good as they would like, but it's just as bad to forget about the fans who paid money for the app Connector Well-Known Member May 6, 2012 15,512 1 0 In the Chatroom http://thechatroom.freeforums.net/ #8 Connector, Aug 30, 2013 This isn't a temporary free, this is an intentional $3 app made to freemium, a bait and switch. If you delete it, you will gets ads and a freemium app. I still say this should be illegal and hopefully some crafty lawyer will sue Apple for this blatent bait and switches to stop this growing trend. If this happened to all games, everyone would be pissed. Anyway, there is nothing I can do about it, cause I had deleted it shortly after purchased, so my $3 is long gone, but I honestly think it should be illegal. I think if an app is priced as a midranged premium app, it does make it worse. But really, this is more the principle, not the buck or whatever the early adopters paid for it. Anyway, I didn't care much for the game especially with the big disk size, so it didn't stay in my ipad after purchase. Now if I reload it, it's got ads and is freemium. This stuff just has to stop. Baiting and switching needs to become illegal, cause honestly, if it was a physical purchase it would be illegal. It's the principle and it really hurts the appstore not only for consumers but also for good devs too cause it often makes people think twice about purchasing games if they constantly have these bait and switches done. I really don't think it is right for some to justify it just because a game didn't sell well. Just because a dev didn't make a profit doesn't seem to justify doing something that is borderline illegal. AnarKitty Well-Known Member Oct 10, 2010 3,654 0 0 Minneapolis, USA #11 AnarKitty, Aug 30, 2013 It amazes me that devs continue to push this sort of functionality theft on paid users without even trying to honor the money spent in good faith. If you can't or won't ensure your paying customers will be able to keep and use what you've sold them, find a new line of work. This is utter rubbish and should be outlawed in the iOS App Store. klink ð® Spam Police ð Jul 22, 2013 1,617 0 0 No thank you USA https://twitter.com/BitGamerX #12 klink, Aug 30, 2013 I guess the mob has spoken. This isn't the first game to do this. Hell I remember paying a premium for Ace Patrol and bam, it went free. This happens way more than it should and nearly nothing is said about it. It's wrong to sell an app for a premium and than after you got your initial rush of paying customers, switch the game to free so the dev can profit off ads and/or IAP. It's a slap in the face to the initial supporters of the game and can be considered thievery. The only right way to handle this would be for the dev to make a free version. If they aren't prepared to make a separate free version, than they failed with their budgeting. A sign they wanted to push their app out the door to profit as fast as possible. I'm sure this happens with indie devs that are just new to the business and is innocent enough but again, it happens too often and should be fixed. It would be a huge undertaking, but it would resolve issues with the bait & switch that is sometimes pre-planned and sometimes is a knee jerk reaction to a game not selling well. It would be nice if gamers had some protection from the developers changing things for the worse. This is why I keep backups of multiple versions of games that I like. Your best bet is to research before you buy. For example, as much as I appreciate the Game Baker devs, I know their games will drop to a buck. Madgarden/Rocketcat I will buy regardless of the price, they are excellent devs. The same with Days of Wonder, Big Daddy, The Coding Monkeys (though WTF, lost cities STILL isn't universal?) all get purchased without waiting. Devs of games like Gemini Rue, Little Inferno/World of Goo, Machinarium, Sword and Sworcery all will get my business without so much as blinking. So figure out the track record, and judge from there. We will still get burned in the end, but there's nothing wrong with being patient and waiting to see sometimes. Do it every time, though, and we will see this tactic happening more and more frequently. That's the issue with the "wait and see" approach, devs very rarely put on a huge sale because they're doing incredibly well, they do it because they are struggling to stay relevant. rzdesign Well-Known Member Apr 5, 2010 163 0 16 Illustrator & (Game) Designer The Netherlands http://www.rzdesign.nl #19 rzdesign, Aug 31, 2013 Guys, dev here. Just wanted to clear some things up. First of all, we're sorry for everyone feeling 'screwed over' cause of our price change and the implementation of ads... We would have loved to see things differently, but sadly, the number of sales were disappointing. We barely re-earned our investments in the title (music, audio, tools, licenses, etc.). We have made some decisions which after all, just didn't worked out. We should have released An Alien with a Magnet for free at launch, but well.. we learned it the hard way. Even with all the marketing and reviews we did and got we didn't got over 2000 sales. So.. we decided to change the price to free for one day to see how things would turn out. OF COURSE we would never forget our paid customers, and when you update the game, you won't have any ads at all... Yes, you'll get the ad screen (it's just one in the main menu) one you delete the game and reinstall, but it seemed like the best choice. A new FREE version of the game with ads would make no sense at all... The free versions would get over 10.000 users fast easily, while the paid one would stick at around 2000. So we would have had nom-active Everyplay videos/community and leaderboards and such... cause we can't combine two builds as one in the iTunes Connect. Anyhow, we are able to remove the ad screen completely from our paid customers if you read this and send me a PM with the Mac address of your iDevice(s), so Chartboost can add you to the ad block list. I know it's not the best work around, but we are making it the best we can. Hopefully most of you can understand and still support us.
