VoxelCity is a love letter to SimCity and the city building genre. I loved these games growing up, and I am very happy to bring you this one. I'm a solo developer and this is my first release, but I am hoping you will give my game a try. I would love to be able to keep making games. Thanks for taking a look! russiaone Well-Known Member Jan 4, 2009 1,300 0 36 Pimp San Francisco #2 russiaone, Sep 3, 2015 Alright, here the very first impressions after only a few minutes, from a guy who often gives up on these kinds of games, because beginning is always the difficult part. So, yeah. For noobs like myself a tutorial would've been greatly appreciated. Without one, I'm totally at a loss. Now, I noticed that once you begin putting pieces in place, a prompt appears about what all is happening. But, in my noobish opinion, it's not enough. I'll try and give another go and see if I push past my initial thoughts. Again, though, appreciate the code. And I hope the game does well. Cheers sapphire_neo Well-Known Member Jan 20, 2011 3,936 0 0 #3 sapphire_neo, Sep 3, 2015 This is a fairly interesting and streamlined take on the city-builder genre. I think the game could benefit a little from a cleaner choice of font. rezn Well-Known Member Patreon Silver Mar 8, 2014 862 6 18 Male Coder/Keyer in medical ICD 10 Reno, NV #4 rezn, Sep 3, 2015 Last edited: Sep 3, 2015 I'm assuming the codes went quick. Will love to hear more impressions and I'll add this to my list to buy next Wednesday! Looks pretty cool. I'm also curious if this game has anything to do with the PC/Mac VoxelCity with tm at the end. lucidwalker Well-Known Member Aug 14, 2015 45 0 6 #5 lucidwalker, Sep 3, 2015 I like the game. A bit hard atbthe beginning but with higher gamespeed all problems are solved. Higher Gamespeed without iap. Its a plesure. Some initial thoughts (after opening once): * Could definitely use a tutorial. Prioritize that. * The font does make things a bit hard to read. * I see a lot of promise though. I'm going to keep poking around and seeing what I can come up with. How do you build roads? Can't figure that one out yet... djstout Well-Known Member Jul 21, 2011 2,673 97 48 Sportscaster & football (soccer) coach Taiwan & Japan #10 djstout, Sep 3, 2015 I think my very first game on Macintosh was Sim City one in black and white, I spent so soooo much time playing it but I didn't even bother buying the newest version on iPhone, full of timers, Iaps and social network share stuffs. So yes this game is on my wish list but I don't want to spend another 2 dollars for a game that I won't play (I spent far too much recently with deer God and others). If this game feels like Sim City (the first one) then yes I'll get it and I'll happily support the dev. But if we won't get any tutorial and the difficulty is too high, then no LarryWP Well-Known Member Dec 19, 2013 89 0 0 #11 LarryWP, Sep 3, 2015 I supported the dev on this, but after playing for a bit, I see it needs a lot of work. Looking forward to updates. bazola Active Member Mar 8, 2013 34 0 6 #12 bazola, Sep 3, 2015 Thank you so much to those who purchased the game! Your support will not be forgotten! I will address a couple points. There is a tutorial that can be found on the main title screen of the game. Playing through that should help to understand the basics. There is also a Help menu under the Game menu that talks about some of the finer details. The game was not meant to be super easy, so I am sorry if you are frustrated! Once you complete some of the Mayor Missions, you unlock abilities that will make your future cities stronger. There is not currently a way to build roads. This was a specific design decision. I designed this game for mobile from the beginning, and I felt that needing to worry about roads and traffic was beyond the scope that is typical for the mobile experience. I am considering adding a limited road construction system to the game, however the purpose of the roads would be to increase the desire of nearby tiles, so they would not strictly be necessary. I am listening to all of the feedback I'm getting, and regardless of how many people purchase the game, there will be updates coming. Let me know any features or improvements that you would like to see. Thanks again! The challenge is definitely there and I really love the voxel look. I agree with a previous post stating about a font change would probably look a bit nicer but that's a very minor niggle and doesn't detract from the gameplay at all. Another suggestion would be to add a little confirmation text after you hit the save button..like 'Saved' right beside it or something. Finally glad to see a city builder on iOS that doesn't have timers and has it's own unique charm to it. It's quite accessible and looks quite simple and clean, but it's got depth under the surface. The music sounds straight out of a SimCity game too, sometimes mellow and chill and other times upbeat and funky. Fits in perfectly. Really great game and I look forward to future updates! Would be neat to see more variations of buildings in the zones or even different map sizes. Pyroknight Member Mar 31, 2014 14 0 0 #16 Pyroknight, Sep 4, 2015 I might be missing something with how many great reviews this has, but this game doesn't seem to have much depth. At the start it can be rocky if you don't know what to do, but you can just plop down a power plant, water tower, and a few of each category, and just wait until people eventually move in and you start making tax dollars. As soon as you stop losing money the game becomes really easy, because you can just build to your hearts content, wait till you get to max money, and put roads and health at 4 for a bit before dropping them back down once you've run out of money. Then there isn't muh to do, besides filling the map with buildings. bazola Active Member Mar 8, 2013 34 0 6 #17 bazola, Sep 4, 2015 Last edited: Sep 4, 2015 Pyro, have you started building arcologies yet? Planning those and getting them to pop up can get pretty expensive. I'm back to share a bit about the future of the game. I am planning to add content to the game in three phases. I can't promise a time frame for the content, but the first one should be released fairly quickly. 1. Scenarios Choose a scenario from a list of options. Each scenario will present different challenges and advantages. One example would be trying to save a failing city with a large sum of money. 2. Disasters Game not challenging enough? Up the difficulty by enabling disasters. A couple examples would be earthquakes shaking the city and destroying buildings, or voxel aliens invading and abducting your citizens. 3. Roads and More Buildings You will be able to construct roads around the city, increasing the desire of nearby tiles. A new set of 30 or so buildings will be added to the game, with corresponding Mayor Missions to unlock them. Edit: I forgot to mention that along with these updates, I am also planning to add high scores to the game so that people can compare their cities against each other. The scoring system will consider the current year, total population, and difficulty level. Higher scores would require players to play a bit more efficiently, because abusing the Ultra speed can really rack up the years quick! After that, who knows. I could add larger maps and more detailed terrain generation. I could add lots more funny or hard to complete missions. I could add a secret helicopter mode where you can fly around the city SimCopter style.. nah that would be too crazy Pyroknight Member Mar 31, 2014 14 0 0 #18 Pyroknight, Sep 5, 2015 Arcologies aren't too hard to get, I can just up roads to 4 for a few seconds. However, disasters would be awesome. This game reminds me a bit of micropolis and disaster management was a really fun and interesting part of the game. hunkyducky1 Well-Known Member Aug 9, 2013 140 0 0 #19 hunkyducky1, Sep 5, 2015 Can you destroy buildings in this game? You will of course lose the money that you spent placing the original tile. I considered adding a demolish button to the game, but the UI is already pretty full. I may find a way to add a demolish button in the future though. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
