Shelter Impression I spotted this game on Appshopper last night and decided to give it a whirl. However once I started, I had a really hard time putting it down. Than I noticed TA hasn't reviewed it. So here is my impression. Shelter is a strategic, survival card game set in a familiar story line. Based in a setting of a zombie apocalypse (shhh - the characters refer to them as the fallen) the story unfolds in a visually pleasing graphic novel style. The game and artwork were done by one man army Chris Roberts at Survival Games. Although the visual style and tone might remind you of the walking dead series, it manages to feel original in its own right thanks to it's solid mechanics and tightly interwoven story. Everything seems so polished. At certain points, I felt like I was playing a seamless mix between Organ Tail: Directors Cut and The Walking Dead; with cards. With choices such as furthering the main story line or seizing opportunistic supply areas, Shelter feels open enough where you have control of your destiny. The real meat of the game is definitely in the duels. After you choose your destination, you're squared up against whatever zombie types within the building. Between you and the hoard however, is a blockade to help slow down the fallen giving you a fighting chance. Sure they may outnumber you ten to one, but you have a working brain and fresh tactics to unleash on the various zed types. These different types help deepen the strategy. Some may have armor while some can heal themselves and should be taken out quickly. There are ten cards you draw. Five barricade cards will be laid out for you at the start while the other five are single use attack cards. The latter ranging from pistols and rifles to close range, final stand weapons like an axe or a chain lock to whoop ass with. They may also be supporting types like ammo for extra bullets or plywood to help strengthen a weakened barricade. Each card has a certain number of action points or AP so it's important to choose wisely each round as you have a limited number that replenishes each round. Overall Shelter is easy to learn, very well polished, and challenging all in one neatly packed app. If you're looking for a zombie survival game with rock solid mechanics, check it out. There isn't any IAP and is worth every cent of the regular asking price. Regardless if you're into CCG or not, the game manages to keep you hooked and engaged the whole time. It's quite good, though it's confusing at first since some of the terms aren't explained (like "stack") ScotDamn Well-Known Member Patreon Silver Jul 8, 2013 1,990 0 36 Wireless Sales Happy Daddy https://twitter.com/ScotDamn #8 ScotDamn, Aug 25, 2013 I don't understand. Those are 2 different elements in a video game. A game can be story based with missions in it. Shelter is story driven with the ability to choose what locations you want to visit. Some locations further the main story. Royce Well-Known Member Mar 22, 2011 4,239 179 63 #9 Royce, Aug 25, 2013 I just picked this up and have only watched the tutorials so far. I meant weapons like machine gun in the first area says it kills stacks and the hunting rifle pierces but you don't find out what that actually means later. I almost died on a later mission because I scoped the rifle and found out later I can't shoot enemies that are close Mj1ggy Well-Known Member Jun 5, 2012 86 0 6 #13 Mj1ggy, Aug 25, 2013 This game looks quite good thanks for the heads up! For instance, after zooming in on the board, if you decide to take a look at your available cards and go back to the board, it goes back to being zoomed out. Not the worst thing in the world and certainly not a game breaker, but it does become slightly annoying. Another issue I came across is when you are dealing with the zombies who consume your AP. Before the fight begins it explains that if they take your AP, it's gone forever. The very next sentence below it says if you kill them it will release the AP. So it's quite confusing. Not only that, but after the fight I noticed I was down 1 AP. So it seems this is permanent. That is pretty harsh. I think one addition that would really enhance the duels would be a luck element. Let's say you don't have an available weapon that will do enough damage to take out a baddie. Maybe occasionally some weapons could have a chance to do a little extra damage. I think that would be really exciting when you aren't expecting it and your getting down to the wire and Bam, you take him out. I like the deck building aspect. It's super easy to adjust and fun to collect new cards to use. It lets you choose which type you're after to round out your existing deck. Really nice touch there instead of being awarded completely random cards. Overall I would rate my experience so far 4 out of 5. Definitely recommended material but not without a few faults. I can see this game becoming an easy 5 with more updates. Royce Well-Known Member Mar 22, 2011 4,239 179 63 #15 Royce, Aug 25, 2013 Me too. It looks pretty bad in 2X mode. All of that is explained in the 3 tutorials except the scope, and that is explained right on the card itself. I think you misread something. As was explained, there are two types of AP consumers: Those who "leech", and release the AP when killed, and those who "drain" AP, and don't release it. currymutton Well-Known Member Oct 16, 2008 4,430 1 0 #16 currymutton, Aug 26, 2013 Puzzled: it seems that this one goes free only in US... One is Steal AP which releases once it is killed and one is Drain AP which is permanent. Permanent! A bit much I would say. It should also be more specific like actually saying there are two types. Overall though, I think this is a pretty decent game worth the price if anyone is on the fence. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
