I am a big fan of the Tower Defense Genre, I could go into a lot of detail about resource management, strategy, trial and error based learning curve etc. I have been doing some reading, trying to find the best Tower Defense games around, more specifically on the iPhone/iPod, but not limited to. Two games that kept popping up as the "BEST" TD games on the iOS device were The Creeps and Fieldrunners. I have both these games, and they are far from my favorite. Fieldrunners was great to start with, it was the first open field TD I played, and the concept of not placing your towers along a fixed path was refreshing. Though I found games to go for too long and interest to be lost quickly. To be honest, I haven't got far into the game, and perhaps this is why I haven't enjoyed it as much as other people. As for The Creeps, I adore the idea. Defending your sleeping owner from his night terrors. It's Cute. It's a shame that this thematical concept doesn't have a strong presence through out the game (think PvZ). I am finding it rather challenging, but not quite interesting enough to keep me playing at every spare moment. I think the only reason I am still playing it, is so I can finish it and put it under my belt and move on to something better. For a comparison, my favorite TD game son the iPhone are so far: GeoDefense: It was my first, I loved it. Still haven't finished it, had to start again multiple times due to new phones. Plants vs Zombies: Interesting twist on the game play, unlockables, huge variety. (though since finishing it, I haven't played it other than to show friends) This discussion is open to all TD type games, not limited to the iOS devices, but preferably more focused on. Also, I would love for someone to reply with some selling appoints about the two games in the title. Am I missing something about these games? Or have I just played better?
Two words: personal preference. I own a load of TD on idevice, including all you've mentioned, but my absolute fave (apart from PvZ) are Defender Chronicles and ElementalMonster TD. That is not to say that I didn't enjoy the ones you mentioned.
i think that their simplicity, not many towers and passive upgrades has some appeal. also nice visuals are key to success. however i bought them but deleted it very soon, because of these reasons, such games are too basic. there are more advanced and clever td games in the appstore. and another very important point, these games were one of the first td games for iphone, that's big point (doodle jump, flight control etc).
I love both the games you have mentioned. Great bright colourful visuals. I also really enjoy playing GeoDefense Swarm. Same kind of visuals as Geodefence but they don't come on a pre determined path. I was addicted to Savaged Moon on the PS3 for a while.
I was really hoping to generate an intense discussion about TD games, and have many people reply telling me exactly why Creeps and Fieldrunners are the best in technical terms.
Fieldrunners was one of the first games I got on my iPod Touch, and I got Creeps a while ago while it was free. Both are good games (and I am a huge fan of TD games, spent a ridiculous amount of time playing them in Warcraft 3), but they aren't really "the best" TD games I've played. I would probably recommend Fieldrunners if someone asked for a good TD, but there are definitely better. It's all just personal preference.
Defender Chronicles is easily my fav. iOS TD game, The Creeps is fun as well, just not as fun. Geodefense is in the top somewhere, but I find it too hard at time(same with Swarm). Regarding PvZ, I had a lot of fun with it, however it's so diff. from "traditional" TD games that it doesn't really scratch that TD itch I get sometimes. Fieldrunners has never held my attention, but it's still an okay TD game I guess, nothing special. Overall though, Pixeljunk Monsters is the best one to me. Pick it up if you have either a PS3 or PSP.
I'm not a fan of TD games but tried some and for people not already fan of TD The Creep is an excellent pick if not the best for newbie, among those with a very classical gameplay. Cute and very clear graphics, fullscreen maps and not too intricate but still with a fair complexity, not too many type of tower to choose, not too many upgrades, multiple difficulty levels, not too many waves and a maps difficulty curve more soft than in many TD. Another important point is that everything is very clear, like upgrades identification, monsters identification, path, damages and attacks, all. And there's a pleasant shift with the obstacles managements and few more minor tricks, this making it different for the newbie who tried quickly many. I never played Fieldrunners, but did Plants vs Zombies, it's not a classical TD but it's the best among those roughly similar I played. I see no TD to be even half as generous in design amount, not many as clear, almost none with a so nice difficulty curve management (even if I can admit it's a bit at price of a difficulty a bit low), cute, humour, and many more. For classical TD well I don't know but for action TD I have three favorites, Knight Defense HD (but is it still a TD), Monster Feed and Earth Defender, but I'm very far to be a TD or similar genre specialist and haven't play ton of them.
I've played quite afew TD games. For me, what makes or breaks the TD games are their own charm and character. Fieldrunners - Cute. My first on iPhone, and loved it for being a charming little game, where the soldiers eek out as they die. 7 Cities - Innovative. At first this seemed a little soulless compared to FR, but its innovation lay in being able to upgrade the towers to have alternate powers, not just damage. GeoDefense - Enthralling and immersive. Seriously hardcore but you get such a high from completing levels. The psychadelic graphics really hook you into its world and doesn't let go. Sentinel1: Mars Defense - Innovative. Brings two new elements to the TD table: Barriers to repair/hold off enemy progress and droids to harvest resources for upgrading weapons faster, or repair your deteriorating defenses? Plants vs Zombies - Charming and challenging Not in the same TD style as others, but still fantastic game. The fact it starts off with Plants (!) being your saviour itself earns some charisma points that others don't have. Epic War TD - ?? Only just got this recently, and played it on-off. Undeniably gorgeous, and has alot of upgradability, but the UI does seme to get in the way of smooth gameplay... feels ackward having to pause each time you upgrade or build towers. I haven't developed an affinity with this one yet... the gameplay seems too stuttered to build up any character.
Haven't tried Fieldrunners but Creeps is probably my favorite of the TD games I've tried on the iphone. I think its becuase it reminds me a bit of Pixeljunk Monsters which I played to death on the PS3. I like the Geodefense games but find them a tad characterless and I guess humorless.
Maybe if you worded your sentences a little better we wouldn't have this problem! Also I think I got a good idea for what you meant, which is why I pointed towards my 29 post count, which I think pretty clearly shows that I don't come here too often. I started with Fieldrunners. The original Fieldrunners - no sound, one map . I loved it, because it was cute and NEW - one of the first strategy games which looked cool and was easy to handle. After this, I got 7 Cities which I loved for the upgrades and nice maps and then went to geoDefense and Defender Chronicles. Of all four games, Fieldrunners is the only one, which feels dated, too easy and too beginners-like. The other three games I still love. The offer plenty of content and upgrades, a challenge and look very good. You get tons of hours out of these games.
