Some tips on non Z3 planes

    Yak-3-I:
Strength - Highest firepower among non Z3s, fastest speed among non Z3s, lowest stalling speed and smallest target in all SoG plane.
    Weakness - No distinct weakness.

    P38-L-I:
Strength - Hardest armor in all SoG planes and high firepower (2nd highest among non Z3s).
Weakness - mediocre maneuverability, high stalling speed and slow max crusing speed.

    Mosquito-II:
Strength - Hard armor (2nd hardest in all SoG planes).
Weakness - Mediocre manueverability, large target.

    Mustang-II:
Strength - Best manueverability among non Z3s and high firepower.
    Weakness - Weak armor.

Which non Z3 plane to use?

Firstly, I will only discuss planes that have attribute better than Z3: Yak-3-I (longer firing range), Mosquito-II (longer firing range, harder armor), P38-L-I (harder armor). So they are only 3 planes that can potentially beat Z3 assumng pilots' skills are equal.

Yak3 is a dogfighter. All its other attributes (max speed, manueverability, firepower and armor) are slightly poorer than Z3 but it has the edge of longer firing range. Among the 3 planes, it's the best plane to use to do dogfight with Z3.

Mosquito-II and P38 are not dogfighters and strength is in h2h fight due to their high armor but mediocre manueverability. The key differences of these 2 planes will make the tactics to be used differently. In terms of defence, P38 have harder armor and smaller target so it's a better survivor than Mossie. In terms of attack, both has about same firepower damage (with P38 slightly higher), but Mossie has much longer firing range and its faster max cruising speed make it better in the offense.

So when comes to h2h, Mossie can do long range h2h while P38 will excel more in short range h2h than Mossie.

So which plane to choose? It all depends on your reference. :D

    To sum up:
    1) Yak-3-I: a dogfighter with long firing range.
    2) P38-L-I: best armor and best short range h2h, but short firing range, slow crusing speed and high stall speed can be frustrating.
    3) Mosquito-II: best long range h2h

Edit: There is no diference in firing range that I just verified. So please ignore anything on firing range I mentioned in this post.

That is great info Shern, thanks a lot for that. I have the BOB and picked up the Z3, trying to get as much value as possible. I usually use the Fockewulf II that you can unlock early in missions and the Z3 for h2h.

  5. Good idea.

Thnaks for the info. When I upload more planes i´ll copy your comments to help learn more about the planes.

Manueverability test - just the pitch rate is tested

This is just to check the pitch rate for each plane by timing the time taken the plane take to complete 5 vertical loops.

Sorted by best timing to worst. I don't have the Hien-II in my hangar to do the test. numbers in bracket are the handling spec shown in market.

    1) Zero-III (5.0) 17.5sec
    2) Mustang-II (4.5) 19.8sec
    3) BF109-II (4.0) 19.9sec } surprise here
    4) Yak-3-I (4.5) 20.0sec
    5) Corsair-II (4.5); FW-II (4.5); Zero-II (4.5) 21.0sec
    6) Mosquito-II (2.5) 22.2sec
    7) P38-L-I (4.0) 22.3sec
    8) Spitfire-II (4.0) 22.4sec

#2 to #5 are very close to each other and resemble 4.5 rating standard. So BF109-II should be 4.5 stars in handling. #6 to #8 are also very close together and resemble 4 stars rating in handling. So Mosquito-II should be 4.0 star.

    In short, manueverability best is Z3 > (P51 = BF109 = Yak3) > (Corsair = FW = Z2) > (Mossie = P38 = Spitfire)

    Mustang or BF

With the discovery that BF can turn as fast as Mustang, the main difference between these 2 planes is BF has better armor while Mustang has better firepower. So you choose. :)

BF also has better armor than Yak3 but Yak3 has the firepower better than Mustang and BF.

Edit: I just timed the roll and yaw of this 2 planes and find Mustang-II is faster than BF-II in rolling and yaw. So Mustang is still better in handling.

The armor rating is misleading on the BF because it is a smaller plane and therefore a smaller target and takes less damage. Both have adequate firepower and both can hold their own in a furball against a zero III. The Mustang though has the best Yaw control of all three planes and can perform maneuvers the other two can't because of it. It's limitations are it's speed and its armor. Also you have to include the White Hein because it's very similar to the mustang II.

The length and armor are 2 independent factors. The length determines whether the bullet will hit or miss whereas the armor determines the damage incurred when the bullet hit. Remember the damage formula that razvan showed us?

The armor test is done using rocket not MG and is a close range direct hit so the length factor will be excluded from the test.

As I mentioned, my white Hien is missing so can't do any test. Maybe I can find it in my BoB version.

Shern, I have flown both the White Hien and the Mustang alot and in my opinion, the Mustang II has quicker acceleration and can maneuver a little tighter then the Hien but the Hien seems to have better armor. This is only my opinion.

You are right. Hien armor is same as BF and Z3 and better than Yak3 and Mustang.

All SoG planes' firing range are the same!

I'm now fully convinced that there's NO DIFFERENCE IN FIRING RANGE among planes! So the firepower spec is still wrong. Here's how you can check:
    1) Go to skirmish 1v1 TP and set to lowest difficulty. Fly straight to the bot and slow down as you approach it. It will turn back and fly straight allowing you to admire it's backside for how long you wanted. Vary your speed to adjust distance. By placing your aim on the plane, if it's not red, no matter how you fire, it's won't be hit. If it is within your firing range, the aim will turn red.
    2) Try this in DTB and aim at the stationary target. You will get the same result.

Try this in all your planes. You will find that the firing range of P40 = Z3 = Yak3 = Mossie = P38 = and every other plane!

So it's not true that Mossie and Yak3 has further firing range.

    Mustang-II or Yak-3-I

    Let's compare this 2 planes:
Max cruising speed: both are almost the same with Yak3 at 600 km/hr and P51 at 590 km/hr.

Stalling speed: Yak is slightly lower.

Armor: Yak is a notch higher.

Firepower: Yak is a notch higher.

Handling: Both are exact same in terms of pitch, roll and yaw rate.

    Looks: P51 looks much nicer.

So you decide. I choose P51 for the looks and find the difference too small to make any impact in the game. :)

    Yak-3-I or Yak-3-II?

I'm looking at the Yak and want to get opinions from those who have them. I searched the forum, but honestly, it’s too big to sift through. If you wouldn’t mind, give me your thoughts on the two types, Yak I or Yak II?

The Yak-3-II is inferior than the Yak-3-I in all aspects. I preferred the paint job of the Yak3-II though. There are only 3 planes in this game that the 'I' is better than the 'II', namely P40, P38 and Yak3.

So it's up to you to decide, performance or looks. Just like I choose Mustang-II over Yak3-I is for the looks. ;)

Handling fully broken down into Pitch, Roll and Yaw

Plane name (market spec in handling): Pitch 5 rev / Roll 10 rev / Yaw 1 rev (5 rev means time taken to complete 5 revolutions).

    Zero-III (5.0): 17.5 / 16.0 / 17
    Yak-3-I (4.5): 20 / 18.5 / 24
    Mustang-II (4.5): 20 / 18.5 / 24
    Zero-II (4.5): 21 / 18.5 / 24
    Corsair-II (4.5): 21 / 19.0 / 26
    Yak-3-II (4.5): 21 / 19.0 / 26
    BF-II (4.0): 20 / 19.5 / 28
    FW-II (4.5): 21 / 18.5 / 30
    P38-I (4.0): 22 / 19.5 / 26
    Spitfire-II (4.0): 22 / 19.5 / 28
    Mossie-II (2.5): 22 / 19.5 / 28

    P40, Tempest and Hien-II is not tested (I don't have hien-II)

    So the best in overall manuverability is Z3 > (Yak3-I = P51) > Z2 > (Corsair = Yak3-II) > (BF = FW) > P38 > (Mossie = Spitfire) .

Yak-3-II - what about this plane?

Yak-3-II is a plane with handling at 4.5 stars which is worth to look at it. It's pitch, roll, yaw, firepower, and armor is exact match to Corsair-II. It's max crusing speed and stalling speed is also close to Corsair-II. It's speed is 550km/hr while Corsair-II is 570km/hr. It's stall speed is 150km/hr while Corsair-II is 140 km/hr.

The key advantage of Yak3-II over Corsair-II? Yak3 is the smallest plane while Corsair is the longest plane in SoG. So it's harder for Yak3 to be hit.
