iStriker 2: Air Assault will come out next month. It is a 3D scroll shooter support iCade. More information here: http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=174071 . Thanks
Cool! Keep us posted on B-Squadron and iStriker. Glad it worked out well! The buttons stay stiff, I think. That's one reason I do NOT like manual-fire (like Velocispider) in iCade games. Too tiring. (Super Ox Wars is nice, giving you the choice.)
I love my iCade so much, but I also have found the buttons too stiff for rapid fire games. I had been deliberately avoiding many shmups for that reason which is a shame. The stiffness is partly caused by the spring in the button and partly by the type of switch underneath that is pressed by the button. I swapped out all the microswitches for a different brand and it was a little bit better. The buttons required a little less force and there was also a slightly shorter travel distance making them feel more responsive. I was still unhappy though as it was still hard going on rapid pressing games. I am now very happy. I have purchased GoldLeaf brand buttons as recommended by Stiggy's blog. They have softer springs and integrated leaf switches which are also very easy to press (and quiet). Tutorial here with video http://stiggyblog.wordpress.com/2012/04/22/icade-with-leaf-switch-arcade-buttons/ Video of someone keeping stock buttons and installing softer, quieter leaf switches underneath. Wish she did a close up of the buttons being pressed as it's hard to tell how well this worked. She seems pretty happy though. http://youtu.be/n5by6VTS7Tk If you like microswitches, but want them to be a little more responsive, here is Stiggy swapping them out for a different brand. http://stiggyblog.wordpress.com/2012/01/14/inside-the-icade-and-swapping-microswitches/
I've thought about doing a switch mod. Meanwhile I've done a much easier mod: add speakers. There's a lot of airspace in the back/bottom of the cabinet. All you need are small speakers plus these: http://www.amazon.com/Black-Cable-3-5mm-Charger-Iphone/dp/B00509DPRQ/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1358360866&sr=1-3&keywords=ipod+dock+cable+audio+out Audio-out (along with power in) via the 30-pin connector. Better than using the headphone jack: that's about impossible to fit with the lid shut, and would mean two cables to connect every time. I like having just the dock connector to hook up. http://www.amazon.com/Stellar-Labs-35-4180-Headphone-Control/dp/B008DJTB32/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1358360702&sr=8-9&keywords=headphone+volume+control Volume control which sticks out under the bottom-side edge of the iCade (since the iPad's volume switches are only for the headphone jack, not the line-out). (OK, not literally those... but I used very similar parts. Sadly, the 30-pin audio cable I got does not have the Apple stamp of approval and is flawed: it does NOT work with a lightning adapter.)
I can name hundreds of games I wish had iCade and iCade Jr support but the majority have been named in this thread thus far. I got my iCade Jr when it was on Thinkgeek's christmas sale, $10 instead of $50. While I'm grateful it was ten bucks, I certainly would not have paid fifty for this. There's only a handful of games, I enjoy, that are compatible with it. And for whatever reason Atari Greatest Hits is only compatible with the original iCade, not the Jr. Which sucks cause I have every Atari Greatest Hits game they offer. I would jailbreak my phone, but for whatever reason the people who create those jailbreaks have not established a working one for the iPhone 4S with iOS 6.0 or 6.0.1, the only one that works is with iOS 5.0.1 but I do not want to downgrade my iOS. Sooooo many games I own would be great with it, from Final Fantasy Tactics, to X-Men Arcade to Marvel vs Capcom 2 (and any other fighter out there). Sigh. We can only hope and pray.
How did we not notice that Donut Games has started supporting iCade? That's like an iCade candy store! Bubble Pig is on the official Ion list, but I've found several others (from the app descriptions). More keep coming! I have several of these already, but so far I've only iCade-tested Rat on a Snowboard (very simple, just push the stick up to jump/double-jump) and Sunday Lawn (4-way control with a kind of puzzle/Pac-Man feel). Both have iCade menu control as well. Here are the iCade-ready Donut games so far (all Universal): Bubble Pig Rat on a Scooter XL Rat on a Snowboard Rat on a Skateboard Sunday Lawn Gold Miner Joe Action Driver Icy Escort Action Hero (May as well put all Donut games on your AppShopper wishlist, because they have a ton of games and often have one of them for free. But I like most of them enough to pay the buck. Super-simple, but somehow appealing. All in fine retro style.)
Wow! Thanks so much for mentioning. Strange that this wasn't announced at all. Great news after the disappointment that Temple Run 2 does not have iCade support.
Thank you Donut Games for starting to add iCade support for your games. You keep adding it, we'll keep buying 'em.
Gridlee is currently on the AppStore for anyone who wants some old school arcade gaming on the non-jailbroken iCades.
Gridlee link https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gridlee/id595117070?l=es&ls=1&mt=8 Runs on MAME 0.139u1 technology See forum thread http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=176097
Beat me to it! To spell it out clearly: it looks like (for the moment!) the game Gridlee can be used as an all-purpose MAME emu to install other games into (and no JB needed). It's 85 MB, Universal, and free (assuming it lasts). Please ROM responsibly MacRumors article: http://www.macrumors.com/2013/01/26/fully-functional-mame-emulator-appears-in-app-store/
Hi ! The release of B-Squadron : Battle for Earth v1.60 ready for iCade game controllers available January 30th, 2013! Here is a small video of the gameplay with the iCade Core ! I'm waiting for your feedbacks ! Régis
Critter Panic is a new free version of Match Panic. It's a simple (but not easy!) left-right matching game that supports the iCade. Fun for the whole family! Other Chaotic Box games are on sale for $0.99, including Silverfish Max, which I assume everyone reading this thread already has, but just in case some new iCade owners don't own it yet: it is great.
Rat on a Skateboard now supports iCade. I'll try to keep my Donut Games list updated--at least, when a game I already own gets iCade support: http://forums.toucharcade.com/showpost.php?p=2645006&postcount=1404 Looking forward to B-Squadron too!
