Hi fellow TAers. I thought it would be nice to have a thread that allows savvy Dos people an opportunity to help out others who have the iDos program, but don't really know how to realize its potential. Please make the explanations as simple as possible (Dos for dummies), and PLEASE no links/discussions of illegal programs or sites that deal with pirated software. Thanks!
For basic functionality if you have no experience with DOS The initial prompt: C:\ if you type dir: C:\dir every folder in the directory will be returned. to navigate to the folder you want first type cd\ C:\cd\GAMES to navigate back to the previous directory C:\GAMES\cd\ returns C:\
DOS is rather cryptic by nature but it's not as overwhelming as it first appears. I was able to figure things out as a child, I'm sure you will soon have no trouble ordering DOS around either. Try starting here:
So how do you...uhm...get games on here? I have Tyrian on my PC which I downloaded a while back when I realized it might never make it back onto the app store, along with DOS Box, but I never actually got around to trying to make them work. Which file extension should I be looking for when I go through the folder to add to iDOS via iTunes?
Thank you very much for the information already shared in this thread and to those who will add their knowledge and findings in future posts. I do vaguely remember DOS, but I really don't want to have to go back to school to play some games. My first question: I have LOVED Telengard forever. I grabbed the remake and unzipped it this AM. **Answered it myself - deleted and unzipped again. Works now. Too bad you have to switch back & forth from the keyboard so much. I wish they would have thought of this problem in 1976 - ha! Thanks again!
I have not tried it on the ipod yet but you would first have to navigate to the proper directory which it is located and then type the name of the .exe file and press return. Someone needs to explain how to get programs into the directory system
This app is no longer available. Here's a link to the main iDOS thread, where there's a lot of info: http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=71071
I have been playing around with different DOS games, and I tried using zsnes with iDOS and found that it used up all of the allocated CPU. Is there a way to increase the amount of CPU that iDOS can use?
So far i've put the A4 on my iPhone through: - Lemmings (Runs fine on max cycles, choppy sound but playable) - Pushover (Runs fine, Timer could be an issue until used to touch controls) - Warcraft (Runs, yet its too slow to ensure a good gaming session) - Laser Light (Runs, Control Problems - No Mouse Drag) - Creepers (Runs, Control Problems - No Mouse Drag) Overall i'm very happy with this emulator. Games i still have to try: - Colonization - Fury of the Furries - Leisure Suit Larry - Bananoid Awesome stuff
Yep, i'll most definately boot up the original with the text input. There is a way to skip the age check questions, but i dont quite remember. I can also recommend Shogun by Infocom. Very good text adventure, should run fine.
Tyrian has been in the appstore for quite awhile.. Although it was pooled for a few months it is back now and available for all iDevices.. iDOS runs it too, but expect frame hickups, slowness and unresponsive controls..
