I'll be checking out the free version later, but am wondering what the difference is. I see a "buy gold" icon in the paid version too that rings the IAP alarm in my head. Is this another "pay up front and keep on paying" revenue model?

what is the difference between free and regular version?
is it IAP to unlock missions, or to buy in game currency? |

It seems you can unlock full version using IAP in the free version, which is not bad at all... |

well yeah there are iap and of course it affects balance. the reward from missions is very small and replaying levels is not that useful therefore. i bought iap to buy some advanced stuff but if you really want too buy good amulets and upgrade them you will need much more. and grinding is not the option because getting for replaying the level something like several hundred gold won't help to buy upgrades which cost 50k for example. overall the game is quite good and has appeal. there are some balance stuff. basically rush is always the best choice because enemy always has better spells, because game decides which spell you have playing a map and many of them are meh. some of the challenges are too random and stupid. so the game is ok but iap and ai are not the best. i played iphone version and there are also some issues with hitboxes, so i dunno if there is the same behavior on other devices.
