I noticed a bunch of reviews on the Touch Arcade main page. In amongst the reviews, I happen to glance at the first paragraph of the review (admittedly due to the artwork) and was flabbergasted to find an interactive fiction game, set in Qing dynasty China that weaves elements of Classical Chinese philosophy, history, mythology and literature.
Reading further, the review intimated that unlike legacy interactive fiction gamebooks, the game profoundly changes based on how you play and develop your character. The limitation of early interactive fiction (aside from instant death) was having only one correct way of proceeding.
A game of this type is only as good as the writing, the choices that are offered and the consequences of those choices. This has now been added to my list of 'pending games'.
Note: it's a shame that there are no illustrations unlike the legacy gamebooks, or indeed the beautiful hand-drawn illustrations of King of Dragon Pass. Also, the illustration that is used portrays Caucasians, rather than Chinese! The male character looks like Adam Sandler!
Is there a language option? I'd really like to use simplified Chinese (汉字) to enhance the experience - as well as provide to provide additional Chinese study material.
I'd welcome reviews from game books / IF aficionados.
