I have only played a few levels past the tutorial but this game is pretty good. The art work is beautiful and the gameplay mechanics are great.
You simply swipe in the direction you want to move your hot air balloon, which then blows air in that direction. There are also some puzzle/obstacles that require swiping as well and most of these have been fun. There have been a couple of puzzles where you need to create a tornado to open a door up and it has taken me a few times to get it right but that may just be my fault. There are items to pick up as well as a time goal to meet, with a ribbon finish line awaiting you at the end of the level. |

This proves how great the appstore really is
The whole premise of the appstore is to allow indie devs a chance to really show the world what they're made of. This game is no exception. It oozes with polish. You take control of a hot air ballon that is trying to traverse the obstacle filled landscape (or skyscape) to reach the finish line. Each level has three objects that you can try to find, a time limit to beat, and all without destroying your balloon. If you are able to beat the time limit, collect the items, and survive without much damage, you will be awarded 3 stars. I believe the stars are later used to unlock new ballon designs, of which there are many. The ballon is completely customizable. Each pattern has 4 areas of which the color can be changed to your liking. The basket can also be colorized with it's own 4 areas. This alone is a really neat feature, but the fact that you can then use this customized balloon to traverse the challenging levels is just fantastic. You control the balloon indirectly by swiping to create gusts of wind that blow your balloon in that direction. You also use circular motions to create tornadoes that can be used to activate propellers that control doors, suck up water and create a raincloud, or even destroy the various farm houses and blow their roofs across the screen. The trees will also get in your way, but with enough force can be pushed out of the way using very realistic physics. The balloon even squishes and gets patches placed on it when you run into something and get damaged. To me the graphics are not represented well by the screenshots. You really must see them in motion. The whole thing reminds me of a steam punk version of The Adventures of Mark Twain, the claymation moving starting the infamous writer. I only have one gripe about the game. The time limit is usually quite strict, so you'll be playing multiple times to try to beat it. The gusts of wind that you create linger for quite a long time and if you must retrace your steps quickly, they can really get in the way. If either of these things were fixed I would have no problem with the game. Neither are all that big a deal seperate, but together they make for some problems. All in all thought, if you aren't trying to beat all the times, you shouldn't have a problem just leasurely floating through the beautiful landscape. I highly recommend this game. These guys definitely have something special here that needs more attention. For the amount of content, $3 is a very reasonable price and I was happy to pay it. Edit: Now that I posted it here, I realize how long it actually is...wow, didn't know I had that much to say! |

I totally agree with your gripes. When I bought the game I though it would be more on the zen side but it's not. Kind of a bummer really since the game is so beautiful but I'd have to skip exploring and miss playing around with the finer details. I supposed I could either replay the levels or forego the time star all together but still, it seems like a waste to the art. This game is calling out for game center with all the achievements too, was surprised it wasn't integrated. This is a really unique and beautiful game, but somehow it frustrates me as much as it fascinates me. I do think it's a game to have though.
