Yes, this game's only mode is asynchronous multiplayer, up to 40 games.

The great thing about using The League at RobotEntertainmentFans is that you know that the people you challenge and are challenged by are going to take the matches seriously, and play at a reasonable pace. Enforcing structure onto the game isn't something the devs wanted to do, and I doubt they ever will, but the league really fills in the gaps.
