It should be what "lay" beyond these doors since you are talking about something in the plural rather than singular. It's a minor mistake but still pretty obvious to those who know English very well, even if they don't know the rules. It just "sounds" weird, if you know what I mean

e.g.
"Can me has this candy?" (2 mistakes)
"Can I has this candy?" (1 mistake)
"Can I have this candy?" (Correct)
