The official language is not called Hanzi. The official language is called Mandarin in English, or Hanyu/Putonghua/Zhongwen in Chinese (language of the Han/the people's language/Chinese language respectively). Hanzi refers to Chinese simplified characters.
I have been actively studying Mandarin at a local college for over 5 years. And yes, learning the language is difficult. It's probably the most difficult language I've ever tackled as there is no correlation to English, and the language has no alphabet!
