hey guys
i am going to start studying IT in a few months now
and i am thinking about getting a notebook/tablet
i got a pretty new pc at home
so the device i need needs to be portable
and should handle those things
- office tasks ( i will make the presentations on my home pc though just some editing and overlooking
- gaming/surfing and other multimedia tasks for the pauses and bus waiting time
- a nice design
- taking notes, maybe a few drawings
- pdf editing
- a fair price ( somewgere between 0 - 600€ )

All could be done on an iPad. You could use apps like cloudon or a desktop streamer to access and edit documents. Supposedly Microsoft is releasing word powerpoint and etc on iPad soon. Now for your needs you could use a wifi ipad but if you want to use desktop streaming you could jump and get a 32GB wifi+ cellular model which is just about the max on your price range. There are also various pdf editors available for note taking. And with the extra budget you could pick up a nice stylus

I'm actually headed back to Graduate School this Fall, well, late Summer, and I'm seriously considering a new iPad 3... you know, for school (in case my wife reads this).

Seriously though, I'm thinking portability, a wireless keyboard, a dedicated external HD, and I've basically got a much more streamlined laptop...

Does anyone see issues my potential iPad set-up couldn't handle? I'm thinking Ebscohost searches, formatting papers, presentations, printing, etc.

I wouldn't use an ipad simply because the file system on IOS is a pain in the neck, it's extremely limiting as you can't share file between apps or get them on or off the device easily.

If you really don't care about using dropbox or something to transfer files about constantly it could be workable but I know it would drive me crazy.

My thought is a small notebook or ultrabook computer would work best.

ultrabooks are too expensive compared to a note/netbook
a netbook is weaker compared to an ipad ( i think ?! )
and a notebook well would be nice as well but it is bigger and i already got a close-to-high-end pc
i think my decision will depend on microsoft office
there were some screenshot leaks but no confirmation yet

I'd actually say a netbook is more useful in honesty (at least to me), I've an aging Samsung NF110 and it's been a brilliant little machine, Good build quality, Island keyboard, 10+ hour battery life, sound is better than most full laptops, Matte LED Screen, multitouch trackpad, 720p video no problem, I could go on but it's basicly been a very reliable mini laptop to me and is still serving me well.

I will agree though that most netbooks I've seen look like they might fall apart in a breeze and they are useless at gaming although onlive works well.

I'm actually facing a similar decision to you trying to decide on my next mobile, I'm planning an android midrange phone to fit my budget but I'm extremely tempted to splash out more than I can afford to get something shinier (S3). Think the issue is so many options and temptations.

I really appreciate this!

I kind of wondered about where the tech is at the moment, and I hadn't even considered the IOS piece.

Looks like I'll be lugging my laptop... not that it's really any kind of hardship.

Thanks!

Actually i would go with a tablet pc like lenova 220x or older x61...wacom digitizer with handwriting with wacom pen...far superior to multi touch devices.
