The thing to remember is that in this environment the poll results are hugely skewed by the smallest differences in pricing. Games that sell for $1 (or are free) get considerably more votes than those that cost more (by even a dollar or two), because fewer people pick up the latter.
The results don't usually have as much to do with quality as they should; there have been a couple of weeks in the past where "expensive" but innovative, high-quality titles have lost out to tired match-3/endless runner-types because of this.
