Sorry to repeat myself: as a software developer, I quite understand why Apple decided to restrict some features. Some users might think Apple "punishes" them for no reason, and JB is the holly grail... No, it is not! You normally don't need all that extra stuff, especially not at the cost of shorter battery life, slowdowns and system instability...

Or put it otherwise: why do you chose a closed platform if you need something completely different? There are other, more "open" platforms where you can freely play around and install all kind of services and apps as you wish.

Btw, check out the poll results...

Why ask and then get all defensive when people's opinions don't match yours........

The stuff that's not true is the shortening of battery life, messes up your gps, etc.

If you don't have your iPhone unlocked there's the problem with your phone and gps on a jailbroken iPhone don't blame the jailbreak blame the guy that didn't do the research first.

The shortening of battery life is a lie, downloading themes and extra add ins in Curia that run in your background is the cause of that Apple even has apps like that. Just don't download themes or Sbsettings.

Jailbreaking your iPhone/iPod is actually a awesome thing to do some people don't plan to do it because certain plans will not allow you to unlock your phone or if your on the 3GS then you can't really jailbreak if your on ios 5 or above.

If your on an iPod I see no reason not to jailbreak. I haven't jailbroken cause I lost my iPod touch 4g and I'm on my 3GS iOS 5.1.1 phone.

I'm a techie, love to play around with betas, try to make my gadgets run faster than they should and get informed about stuff like that I see it as a learning process of some sort - trial and error for the most part

Back to the thread

Free apps & In-app ads drain your battery for the most part Just do a little research on a subject, or if you are JB and have used Firewall-iP you know what im talking about.

I have ancient iPhone 3G (JB) and iPhone 4 (not JB)
The main advantage for me to use JB device is control & usb mass storage.
3G has low ram amount, so i deleted some of launcdaemons for services i dont use, installed a tweak Omnistat to free ram ,supercleaner to get rid of some frameworks, apps, unused languages and finaly iCleaner. The device works much faster and battery lasts longer even if it is 4 years old.

On the other hand I can see disgust towards JB community from devs - piracy is a problem and a complicated matter that is / was/ will be present in the world.

Devs are pushing the limits of our devices with amazing apps, JB community is doing the same thing with tweaks.

There are always pros and cons to any subject and this one is like Apple vs. Microsoft, Google vs. Android etc.
We have large amounts of people on "both sides" but also there are persons who decide to use best from two worlds and not to argue.

We all have opinions, this is mine but it's just that - an opinion not a fact

I'll leave you with this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njos57IJf-0

Carlos is just spreading FUD. What he's really trying to say is: don't jailbreak because people with jailbroken devices are pirates.

I jailbreaked my iphone 3gs and I didn't like it at the time because well I was just getting a lot of useless stuff and not staying organized. So I went back, that was a year or so ago. I'm thinking of going back because of some of the new tweaks I've seen. But I'm wondering does it matter if I Jailbreak from ios 5.1 or 5.1.1? When I jailbreak how will I upgrade the OS? Also will all my apps still be there and saved data when I jailbreak? I forgot how everything works but I just want to make sure I'll keep my data and apps.

Uh, the whole point of the thread was to debate about why you should or should not jailbreak. Saying "it's just their opinion STFU!!!!!111" is pointless. We are looking for well-reasoned points for or against, not random feelings. So why don't you stop posting useless things!!!!!

Also, you never really refuted this post, Carlos:

It's safe to say that if you keep your SSH off at all times you're phone is just as safe as it was before you jailbroke it. Even if you leave SSH on, how many people actually sit somewhere with a computer scanning for phones with SSH on and with alpine and root, just to hack into? Oh yeah; zero.

And Unknown? You don't download packages from names you don't recognize. There are hundreds if not thousands of names that are trusted in the jailbreak community and all it takes is a quick google search for a review of said package to see it in use and ensure that it's safe.
All you said was, "yeah, but it's still unsafe because i said so!" :\

How about you go back further in the thread history and view my previous post? This thread is a joke, all the comments that are against jailbreaks are simply uninformed conclusions.

I've never run into a problem in the past 5 years of jailbreaking that I couldn't fix by simply reading the instructions correctly. Moreover, the most MALICIOUS apps to ever affect an iphone/ipad/ipod have not come from Cydia, but Apple's own iTunes store. The most recent example was just pulled last week: http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/05/s...e-gets-pulled/

Quoting from the engadget article you linked:
Quote:
"Spam-happy iOS trojan slips into App Store, gets pulled in rapid fashion
...the first non-experimental malware to hit iOS without first needing a jailbreak."
Thanks, great example you brought up!
As you can see, this app got pulled almost instantly from the AppStore.

Rhetorical question: How long could have survived such a trojan in an uncontrolled environment?
No further comments needed, I guess...
