Question What are your favorite world map designs?

I'm working on a project, and would love some insight from you guys.
In-game maps have always been a interest of mine, and I bet there's some great ones out there I've missed.

Currently I'm enjoying, in no particular order:

1. Moshi Monsters - fun & bright colored kid-style, little animation details.
2. Haypi Dragons - 2D layers, nice overview world map VS. detailed location maps.
3. Fieldrunners 2 - gorgeous world map, almost painterly, reminiscent of the Worms series.
4. MonsterUp Adventures - simple, somewhat abstract 2D style put to good effect in a vertical screen orientation.
5. Super Mario World - a classic that still holds up today. Close-up locations, secrets and unlockable areas.

What are some of your favorite in-game world maps, past or present?

Thanks all!

I think super Mario 3 is brilliant. Its made with tiles, its simple and its pretty. We used that for inspiration for our game (Paul & Percy)

I'd have to second Super Mario Bros. 3 as well. I felt that Super Mario World was a tiny bit more linear than SMB3 but still a great example of an over world.

Also, strangely enough, I think Word of Warcraft Flight Path Maps are a good example of an over world (providing they were all unlocked to being with). You have multiple options for destinations, you can skip areas entirely, there are certain bottlenecks at important locations and handy shortcuts if you know where to look.
