My impression is that it is as much a factor to have luck as it is to have a unique app. If it is true that 1000 apps are uploaded to the app store a day, I should imagine that your app (regardless of how good it may be) needs to be in the right place at the right time to get that special attention from Apple, or Facebook etc.
I suppose there is no way to maniuplate the luck if there if making proactive contact with Apple is so difficult. |

It's tough for an indie to get in front of Apple and getting harder. We meet them once fortnightly to submit apps and they're reasoning is that we can act as a filter and if they arranged to meet one developer they'd see one app and instead they can get through a lot by using a marketing and/or PR agency instead.
It's similar to book publishers and literary agents. Kind of like a quality filter. But, if your app is genuinely interesting and good quality and you adhere to their rules then you'll get a call...
