HOW TO use AIRPLAY PLEASE?

Howdy! I just got an Apple TV, and I'm trying to figure out how to do The mirroring for games etc. I know that some games support Airplay, but even on those, I don't see how to get them mirrored to my HDTV?

What do I need to do to mirror my ipad4 to the screen please? Can't I mirror any and everything from my iPad to the screen? I've enabled iTunes home sharing as well AirPlay on the Apple TV and iPad.
