Yes, the actual portal is bluetooth. For $50, you get that, 3 figures, and a code for the game.

Plenty of games cost more than they would if they were freemium, but they also consist of real gameplay that doesn't require you to come back every 24 hours to play for a further five minutes.

I'm getting worried that kids these days might actually think the awkward gameplay style of freemium apps is how games are supposed to be played.

Anyone notice that this also has a dual currency... Coins and gems?

Nope. I bought mine at Best Buy. Maybe they have an exclusive figure?

Seems like. Watch from around 5:30 on from Sanuku's video. Looks like premium currency required to unlock skills, purchase new Skylanders (presumably using a physical one with a portal will unlock the character for free), and potions.
