Default Yes!!!

Ladies and gentlemen, developers and players, please take note: THIS is how a free game should be made!

This game has one IAP - to unlock the full game at a very reasonable price. That is the only IAP. It's free to play for the first 5 campaign missions, as well as some of the multiplayer features. $4.99 unlocks the whole game.

I am downloading this now and will post impressions later. I'm just so glad to see a developer do a free game correctly!!!

I've only played the first 4 levels and a bit of the 5th one, but this looks like a nice tower defence / offence game with RTS elements (well it's turn based, but turns are timed and start/end automatically). Basically you harvest resources, build towers to defend your base, send units to defeat the enemy base (which will be protected by towers).
It's worth a try if you like tower defence games.

iPad Game Review: City Conquest Review

Reviewed by JadeDragon

From an industry veteran and a part of the team that created the Metroid Prime series, City Conquest is a Tower defense game and an RTS game in one. The game offers many single player missions with challenging scenarios and multiplayer mode where you can either play against players locally or online. City Conquest possesses the polish in both game design and the presentation, and it's both entertaining and intense as a mobile game.

Gameplay

City Conquest has a very unique gameplay. It takes the familiar Tower Defense genre and the core of RTS genre and put them into one game. There are total of 20 single player missions, the first five missions are included in the free version. You can unlocked the game after you've played these missions. The single player missions introduce you to the gameplay in an intuitive way that you can immediately jump in and start seeing some action. As the missions progress, you'll need to utilize what you've learned earlier to survive and win. The TD and RTS elements blend in like two sides of a coin, you move from a defensive city to an attacking one seamlessly through the missions in three difficulty levels. The AI opponent feels balanced and reflects the difficulty levels perfectly. The game has a nice mix of open play and goal orientated gameplay, and once you've learned most elements of the game, it'll present you expert challenges which last longer than the normal single missions and are more difficult to complete.

City Conquest offers 9 types of military units and 9 different defense towers, both offer upgrade paths. The types of towers mostly follow the TD game genre, and the attacking units include ground and air. And the RTS aspect of the game is also familiar including mining, upgrading resource building, etc. There are 20 buildings throughout the game, and these buildings are upgradeable in one mission or another. In addition to the attacking forces from the launch pads you build, City Conquest also offers RPG-like spells that you can cast to damage the enemy city, heal your own, cloak your units or uncloak enemy units and freeze enemy defenses.

After the intense missions in single player mode, the game offers a multiplayer mode that allows you to play against either a local player or in a head-to-head battle with another play online. There aren't a lot of players yet, but you should have no trouble finding someone to play against. The game also offers 100 achievements and Game Center support.

Graphics & Sound

There's some resemblance in the graphics styles to those in Metroid Prime games. Buildings look large and sharp, towers look unique and attacking units have a lot of similarities to some of the Metroid machines. The animations of war and movement of units look smooth and touch screen controls are spot on. Maps look varied from mission to mission, albeit some of them are a bit simple. There are several multiplayer maps outside the single player mission maps. The visual presentation as a whole is polished and in high quality.

Sound effect matches the gameplay well with upbeat military themed background music. Towers and units have sound effects as well as "spell" effects from the mother ships.

Conclusion

City Conquest shines as a game that combines Tower Defense and RTS gameplay styles into one game with single play missions as well as adhoc and online multiplayer mode. The game has good AI foundation and also the polish in visual and audio. The game looks nice and sharp on the Retina iPad and animations are smooth with responsive controls. You can download the game for free and play the meaty first 5 missions with an option to unlock the full version thereafter. The game offers increasing replay value as more and more players join online matches.

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics: -4- Sharp and clear. Animations smooth.
Sound: -4- Both background music and sound effects come in good quality.
Controls: -5- Easy to learn and use, very responsive.
Gameplay: -4.5- Plenty of missions to keep you busy and multiplayer offers endless replay value. Good AI and varied missions and maps.

Playing Hints and Tips:

When you build out your buildings, don't block the paths of your mining crafts. Keep clear between the mines and your city.

Build and install as many skyscrapers as you can, and upgrade them to the max.
