Default Review: Castle of Magic - A Platformer At Last

At last, the iDevices have received a platformer. Bounce On was OK but I have been wanting a good 3D (or 2.5D) platformer. Castle of Magic by Gameloft has arrived and has put a giant smile on my face (like this: ).

The game is a polished 2.5D platformer. As the story goes, "a boy and a girl played so many video games that they broke their console system. Forced to play something else, they ended up at the dreaded beach. They find a treasure chest and decide to check it out. They open it hoping to find gold and treasures but instead they get sucked into some sort of portal.". Your mission is to play the levels to rescue the girl.

Controls are D-Pad based and there are no other control options to select from. But that's no problem because the D-Pad controls are just perfect for this game. You also have two buttons (jump and attack) to use. As you progress though the level you can collect power-ups which will not only give you a new cool outfit, also give you a new weapon (they get better and more effective as you collect more power-ups). If you drop your coins, you can tilt your device for them to come your way.

Graphics wise, graphics are great. The game is 2.5D. Framerate is smooth (at least on my 2G Touch). For a iDevice, this is pretty impressive. It looks / runs smoothly.

The game has 5 worlds (though I think when you finish all there is one last ultimate one, not sure because I haven't finished all). Each world is highly detailed and different for each. I mean, compare the above world (world 1) with the Candy World (world 3):

It looks delicious to me. . The AppStore finally has a console quality platformer. I give Castle of Magic thumbs up, 4.5 / 5.0 stars (for those who want a star rating). Castle of Magic has been temporary pulled from the AppStore but should be back up shortly.
