Isn't that illegal to get a free copy of 3.0...?

Are you talking about iTunes on your home PC, or iTunes on your iDevice?

So, I am assuming that you don't have a firewall program that is blocking iTunes from connecting to the internet?

On the help portion of iTunes, there is an option for Run Diagnostics that will let you check you network connectivity. I would start there.

If you have a firewall, like zone alarm, or some such program - that might be blocking iTunes from connecting. If iTunes connects, and it will let you do everything but update, make sure that the computer is "authorized". Apple used to only allow 1 computer to be authorized -now you can have home sharing so other computers can also share the applications. The ipsw that you d/l should not make any difference at all - that is a file that is used only for the idevice - has nothing to do with your home iTunes which is going to be iTune 8.2, or more recently 9.0. Good luck.
