Actually ended up adding a few more things:

* Changed player start position
* Added Health Display outside of battle
* Added eating of Food to regain health
* Added use of Health Potions outside of Battles
* Can equip directly from the Inventory screen

The concept is very appealing but the presentation is lacking. The screens I have seen present a very basic design that doesn't seem to change much from location to location. I think if there were more sprites and variety I'd be more motivated to drop two dollars on it.

Yup! That's what did it.

Does this game rely on an internet connection to play? The persistent world with other peoples discoveries showing up in mine would lend me to think this is the case.
