The announced price is 2,800 yen, which ~$25 USD. I think I'll pick this one up (I have relatives that can buy me the iTunes gift cards in convenience stores in Japan and send me the card codes). I have the PS2 version but I never got around to getting that far into it. It wasn't that engrossing but it'll be interesting on the iPhone/iPad.
In Japan, games are priced at the prices people will pay for them. There's no "fixed rate". If Monster Hunter comes out, people want it, and will pay $80-100 (approximations according to Yen exchange rate) for it. Same goes for games like Dragon Quest, which are outrageously popular in the country. Likewise, Call of Duty will retail for around $40-50, as it lacks the same presence that DQ or MH has in Japan. Of course, we have set pricing models, so while Dragon Quest IX retailed on the DS for about $60-70 in Japan, we got it at $45. My point is, don't think that because it's $25 in Japan, that it'll be $25 here. It's actually very unlikely that the prices will be equivalents. It's safe to assume we'll have a cheaper version.
Having seen that video now I actually like the orientation of the phone when playing. A lot of games these days loose the long view angle when they go horizontal. Better scenery in this orientation. Plus this just makes this game 100% one handed. More RPGs should do this
Yes! I totally agree. I've been wanting developers to do this or at least give us the portrait option just like Knights of Pen & Paper did.

Please bring this to the u.s.!! I've talked to 57 people that have said they'd insta buy this. Yeah 57 may not be that much but that's only In the hour that I've know about this... We are a dragon quest community!!
And on a side note, I want to say thank you so much for the portrait mode dragon quest VIII!! This is what I've been looking for for as long as I can remember. Please SQUARE ENIX, bring this to the u.s asap.
I read somewhere that they found the international texts files in the game and other hints of localization in the credits, so maybe it's coming sooner than expected! I'll search the link for you.
