Hi there, I am interested in becoming an iPhone game developer. I know quite a lot about HTML, Java, PHP, MySQL, CSS, and Flash. Can someone help point me in the right direction for some materials or things I need to do to start developing apps? Thank you so much!
Unfortunately, all that language you know does not help a lot for developing iphone game. There are many threads being a developer, but first off, we need to know more. what type of game, 2D, 3D, how big, and if its going to use another engine.
I guess my first question is "why do you want to become an iPhone developer?". I hear people asking about becoming a dev all the time, but then when it comes right down to it, they don't really want to invest the time and energy into it. The languages you listed (markup and scripting, mostly) won't help you much. Do you have a Mac? That is the first major hurdle, because without it you can't install XCode and might as well give up right there.
I would just like to make a simple top-down dual stick shooter like game, or maybe make an easy jumping game like papi jump. I don't expect my first game to be complicated, I just want to see how they're made because I am really interested in them. It's like a project, and after that I can look forward to making my own game. And I do not own a mac, I have PCs with windows xp and vista on them. I would like to become a developer not for the money or fame, but just so I can contribute to the app store and maybe make some of my ideas come to life. Even if I make one, I doubt i'll put a price tag on it, I just want to learn something that interests me. I have chosen to spend a lot of time this summer (3 months, several hours a day) to dedicate to learning how to make an app. There are engines like GameSalad and unity out there as I've seen. Is it a good idea to use those engines? And also I have looked at some sample code and files for iPhone apps through beta files and they seem to make sense just fine, so I should be ok.
You still need a Mac and XCode. Do you have any examples of games you've done in Java or ActionScript? How many projects have you completed? There is a difference between 'knowing a language' and being 'proficient and productive in a language'. The fact that you simply want to make an iPhone app doesn't mean anything at all. There are dozens of other platforms that are easier to get into, including Android. You still need to cough up the $99 developer fee to push your app to the app store. So none of this is free.
As much as I'm with you (my projects for the summer include learn Blender, the whole creative suite, and make a flash game), you have to realize the reality. Sure you could make a webapp/jailbroken app....but it wont be as recognized as an app....
well essentially its like the land of misfit toys. their made almost the same way but instead of apple approoiving and re-selling it, Cydia, Rock, or Icy dispenses it for all
I meant like the software I would need. And if I really needed a Mac I think I can get access to one at my local library.
the software? well depends on what your doing! you could essentially make the app like your going to submit it to apple, then release it on Cydia.
IS their really no way to develop on windows. That is F****ed up. now ill have to buy a stupid macbook.
well theres different things you can buy, but if you want to submit it to apple, then yes you NEED a mac
Wait so i could make an app on windows but i would not be able to submit it to put it on the app store?
