I got Black Space today as others were talking about it on the forum, but that was before I knew there was a demo of Galaxy on Fire. And I've got to say, I like Galaxy on Fire better. Black Space is by no means a bad game and worth the $1.99 I paid for it, but GoF beats it graphically, combat wise, etc. )at least what I could get out of the demo). I'm surprised that Galaxy on Fire has actually been going up in price (now $5.99 once $2.99 and $4.99). Is the full game worth it? Are there better space combat games out there? If so, any suggestions (and no I don't consider WarpGate a space combat game)?
Have Space Miner. Again, not really what I consider a space shooter. That's almost a micro-management game (and a very good one). But the combat is top down. I'm talking arcade-like space sims where you're either first person in the ship or right behind it.
I'd highly recommend Star Rangers, it's a hi-def remake of Star Raiders, with additional missions. Absolutely brilliant game, one of my favorites.
Agreed. Good game. Have it and like it, but it's also on-rails so it's not a true space sim (don't want too complex, but like to be able to fly my own ship). Anyway, I have quite a few of the games mentioned and maybe will wait on Galaxy on Fire until it drops in price again.
Zone Warrior. I doubt anyone else has ever heard of it, let alone played it, but I think it's great. http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/zone-warrior/id293642867?mt=8
Galaxy on Fire is the best space combat game in the App Store, and a decent space game overall, but it still shows a bit too much of it's java origins for my taste -- notice the jittery 3D animation. The good news is that Galaxy on Fire 2 has been announced, and according to Fishlab it will be 100% OpenGl based, which, combined with their excellent art direction, should yield phenomenal results. Before shelling out cash for GoF I would hold off to hear a release date of on GoF 2.
Somebody should do a comprehensive review of the 3d space combat games in the app store. I have tried several: Star Wars Trench Run is crap. The only thing going for it is the Star Wars tie in. Of it weren't for that nobody would have ever played it. I am biased towards Battle for Vesta as I wrote it. It ha relatively simple ship models but has some unique features. Precise control, lots of ships doing battle at once, and computer controlled wingmen. Inajve played a bit of star rangers and black space. Both have deeper game play and great ship models. But the controls are lacking and it seems that you can only ever encounter a few enemies at a time and then more appear out of nowhere once the ones on screen are dead. So there is never a sense of an enemy fleet. Vesta by contrast can have nearly 100 ships doing battle at once. I have never played GoF as I've seen some negative reviews of it.
You just quoted a post made 3 years ago I think Starborn Anarkist, Beat Hazard Ultra, and ARC Squadron deserve to be mentioned here.
