I am intrigued that you are seeing lag as you get higher. I've not seen this, even on the iPhone 3GS which is equivalent to the 3rd Gen iPod Touch. Is it consistently that way? If it is, it suggests a bug. Do you know what height you start to see it at?

It usually starts to appear when I've gotten to around X4.
