I recorded some video last night. Even when I set up special moves with Queens and scored good points, every single move it cut down my score. I can't find any explanation in the game for it. What am I missing? The visuals are also hard on my eyes. Trying so hard to love this as I'm desperate for a good premium match-3. But this isn't sucking me in. I like the idea of it more than the execution. Subscribe to the TouchArcade YouTube channel Edit: I see the "Demand" now -- I guess that's what I was missing before and what was causing me to lose points. The way the word is written, it never caught my attention. I just noticed the green and red numbers when my score ended. Again, the whole presentation bothers my eyes. The lettering of the words, the pieces design. I probably should have noticed it from the screenshots, but I didn't realize it would bother my eyes until I was actually playing. I would love a cleaner design. I'll try to give this more time, but everything's just so overdone that it's uncomfortable for me to look at it for more than a bit. Edit 2: Something's very wrong. First turn on a game, it said "Demand: 100." I scored 100 points and it slashed all of it. Does the demand mean I need to reach that score so as not to get a penalty or that those points will be deducted no matter what? Why would the game take points from me for no reason? I don't understand this. Even reaching or beating that score causes me to lose the Demand points. I've lost points every single turn, no matter what. And "lock downs" sound like it puts up some sort of barrier, like maybe more wall pieces. That in no way implies that you lose points. I've just never heard of a game deducting points no matter what you do. It's the strangest thing. vectorarchitekt Well-Known Member Dec 29, 2013 2,479 169 63 #9 vectorarchitekt, Mar 18, 2016 As pretty as the game is, info agree with you on a cleaner design. Probably too late now but this game would have benefitted from a minimalist approach like Power Grounds or Tall Chess. Just need the chess pieces to have a discernible outline and their colors to be different enough that you don't need to spend time spotting the pieces you're looking for. Right now, there's so much going on visually that it's distracting me from the game itself. Sometimes simple is better. Repulsa Well-Known Member Jul 3, 2015 1,582 79 48 #12 Repulsa, Mar 18, 2016 Starting to get the hang of it... Most match three games are so simple they get old pretty fast I can tell this more complicated version that actually requires you to consider each move carefully will keep me interested PBSNellie Well-Known Member Jul 7, 2013 1,369 162 63 Southern CA #13 PBSNellie, Mar 18, 2016 Last edited: Mar 18, 2016 It is odd. But it does deduct the "demand" (default) points from your play total, then adds the balance to the game total. I have no idea why this happens, either. However, I am enjoying this purely for the way it forces me to think before I move. And I'm kind of wanting to play chess again. I grew up with chess and haven't really played it in years, but I have a good chess app that I need to break out. Not from what I can tell. It deducted them and then they didn't get added to the total. But maybe I'm just not understanding the rules. I see Score: The score for this turn. Demand: What it deducts from this turn's score. Total: The total from the whole game, and what's left from the score after the Demand is deducted, gets added to it. Edit: Oh, duh. You were agreeing with me. I thought you said it gets added to the game total, but you were saying what's left over does. Which is what I was saying. Carry on. Beantownben New Member Mar 19, 2016 1 0 0 #16 Beantownben, Mar 19, 2016 Fun but tough I've been playing this game for about 24hrs, and am really enjoying it. That said, it is REALLY hard. I'm currently stuck on the 2-6 puzzle, and can't move on without solving it. I'm worried that people with less patience then me will quickly grow frustrated with the game, which would be a shame. Perhaps an easier ramp up in difficulty? Or the key being at the end of the challenge or game levels? At the very least, a hint system would really help, because I am stumped! Defcon1 Member Mar 2, 2016 9 0 0 Animator, designer Atlanta http://www.playchesster.com #17 Defcon1, Mar 19, 2016 The Demand Mechanic and more Hi everyone! Thank you so much for playing Chesster, I'm seeing a lot of people getting hooked on it! To AppUnwrapper, you uploaded a great video, your honesty about the experience comes across and you do a good job covering that first level. I could tell that the "Demand" mechanic was just the bane of your existence during the whole playthrough though! A few kind users have pointed out that the demand is subtracted every turn, sorry that wasn't made more clear. It is explained in the first pop up notifications, though there are a few of them all together upon first play and can be a bit overwhelming. Generally, the "Demand" mechanic was something I used to build tension and increase the difficulty curve instead using something like a timer. My thinking was that having a Demand constantly present would make someone search the grid for those points as well as be a form of pressure without restricting time, in other words, let you thing about it! I would love the chance to work in a hint system. Perhaps you could buy hints by "selling" collected treasure back? So you would lose it from your collection, but you would gain a hint... I kinda like that? Looking back, hints and making things more clear up front would be my two things I would have focused on more. BTW, HINT 1 on puzzle 2-6!: Spoiler Move the Bishop at F-5 to E-4 AppUnwrapper Well-Known Member Oct 26, 2011 4,062 3 0 http://www.appunwrapper.com/escape-games/ #18 AppUnwrapper, Mar 19, 2016 Thanks for explaining! I see what you're saying, but it's still odd to me that there's no way to to play to prevent the points from being deducted. I get that you counter the damage by getting a higher score. But it still feels off for me and means I'm staring at the screen a lot longer than I would like for a match-3. I love the idea of a match-3 with chess pieces, but I guess I was hoping/expecting it would be paced like a match-3, not a chess game. Defcon1 Member Mar 2, 2016 9 0 0 Animator, designer Atlanta http://www.playchesster.com #19 Defcon1, Apr 8, 2016 Puzzle Guide Hi everyone, The Chesster game site now has a puzzle guide to help you though the game! Find the guide here: Puzzle Guide Reading the Guide In the puzzle guide, hints are described as follows: TURN 1: Rook e-4 to d-4 TURN 1 simply means, here are the moves for this turn. Many puzzles also have TURN 2 and TURN 3 moves as well. To read the actual move, imagine a chess board which is an 8X8 grid. The rows (left to right) are numbered starting from the bottom row, 1, to the top row, 8. The columns (up and down) are assigned letters, A for the left-most all the way to H on the right. So to read the move "Rook e-4 to d-4", first find the Rook in column e that is four spaces up. The second coordinate "d-4" is where you want to move that piece to. So following this instruction, you would move that rook from the fourth space up in the E column, one space ro the left,in the D column; "d-4" Sometimes you might see the instruction "take". This simply means to drop one piece on top of another! Other Stuff There are a few things I would like to update as soon as possible, one of which being puzzle 6-7, which has a block in the wrong place. Also in the works is a "restart" button for challenges and puzzles so you don't have to go through the "Failure" screen every time. Lastly, local high scores will also be a priority. Thanks for your support!
