Also, if you would like to help them bring this game to the physical world check out their Kickstarter campaign here http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1337955109/dead-mans-draw-a-card-game-of-risk-and-reward They currently have about 8 days left to earn another $8,600 Getting the app right now while it's free and play testing the game is the BEST way to convince people to donate to their Kickstarter. If you like the game please share it with your friends and direct them to the Kickstarter page. By the way I have absolutely NO connections to this Dev or their game, I would just really like to see them succeed with this project because I believe that this would make a fantastic card game to play with friends and family. hvianna Well-Known Member Jun 14, 2012 734 7 18 Male IT Analyst / Webmaster Brazil #6 hvianna, Nov 1, 2013 Really good! Thanks for letting us know! Drummerboycroy Well-Known Member Apr 2, 2012 4,172 0 36 Clinician Maine! #7 Drummerboycroy, Nov 1, 2013 Holy CRAP this is addictive. Not sure what I thought of it when it first released, but I downloaded it a bit ago, figuring it's a smallish app, so why not? The weirdest thing about it is it truly does mix skill and luck, and it only takes gaining a couple levels and getting the accompanying upgrades to get an idea of how deep this game could get. Perfect for 1-2 minute mini-chunks of time, perfect for 20-30 minute maxi-chunks of time... WHOA. Blown away. Guess who's getting my next, "guilt IAP purchase/app gifting..." DBC nkarafo Well-Known Member Mar 2, 2011 860 9 18 #8 nkarafo, Nov 1, 2013 Yes, it is quite good I can say!! Before downloading I thought it was just a based-luck game and nothing else but it's not like this.. In this review: http://boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/23786/dead-mans-draw-ios-review they have write a very disappointing review but I believe it's very nice. I'm in the beginning but it's not either a solitaire game or neither a very complex card game. If we want to play Magic the Gathering we could. It's of a different kind for fast matches. Drummerboycroy Well-Known Member Apr 2, 2012 4,172 0 36 Clinician Maine! #10 Drummerboycroy, Nov 1, 2013 Really, REALLY getting tired of getting into games only to read that "IAPs will likely be necessary for doing well at higher levels..." Ugh. DBC awp69 Well-Known Member Oct 30, 2009 8,249 0 36 Greenville, SC #11 awp69, Nov 1, 2013 Yeah, now I'm wondering if I should even download this. It sounds like from others that it's addictive and that could spell danger if you staring hitting a wall at higher levels. It's free now and don't mind getting an IAP to support the dev. But I don't like any game where your expenses may never end if you want to keep playing. Drummerboycroy Well-Known Member Apr 2, 2012 4,172 0 36 Clinician Maine! #12 Drummerboycroy, Nov 1, 2013 I literally just said exactly this in response to a developer's question in another thread. I can tell you I would recommend downloading and checking it out, because it is quite sweet. I'm into it for zero dollars, so I obviously owe the developer something if I keep playing, but I really hope my one-time donation is enough... DBC nightc1 Well-Known Member Oct 19, 2012 4,362 0 0 AL #13 nightc1, Nov 1, 2013 IMO, you don't owe them anything if it becomes clear that their only goal is to addict you into a constant dumping of money into the app to keep going (or get anywhere at a reasonable pace). I was going to download this and check it out given the high praise early on in this thread... instead I paused the download and deleted it. No sense in getting caught up in this. slewis7 Well-Known Member Apr 6, 2011 3,775 41 48 Male Retired! Given all that if you download the game for free and end up enjoying it, you should consider buying some IAP (I would suggest the 2X Gold multiplier) to support the dev. TRB4 Well-Known Member Jan 30, 2013 990 0 16 #15 TRB4, Nov 1, 2013 Just a fair warning to all, luck is a MAJOR factor in this game. Don't get me wrong, there is definitely skill involved too, but there are times when the AI will literally take your 40 point lead, and reverse it on you. I have seen some crazy plays made by the computer opponents, plays where they gain 30-50 points in a single draw phase, or plays where they reduce your score by 10-20 points. So if you are a person who can't handle games where luck can seriously screw you on the last turn (games like Mario Kart and Mario Party jump to mind) then this game WILL cause you to rage quit and possibly even break your device (depending on how sore a loser you are.) That being said, the game is crazy addictive and really really fun. You have been warned. That said, what is the deal with these "Traits" the reviewer mentioned? He noted them as the central "IAP-necessitating" issue in the long-run. I have no problem with grinding, or IAP for that matter, but the idea of a brick paywall off in the distance has me worried, and it seems you've put the most time in, so spill. DBC Drummerboycroy Well-Known Member Apr 2, 2012 4,172 0 36 Clinician Maine! #17 Drummerboycroy, Nov 1, 2013 Too funny, I had just that experience already (that "key & chest" thing is great when you have it, not so much when they have it). Oddly, I came back in the rematch (Heck yeah, rematch. I'm no chump. ), and utterly DESTROYED the woman who had previously embarrassed me and my lineage... Take THAT, gypsy lady! DBC TRB4 Well-Known Member Jan 30, 2013 990 0 16 #18 TRB4, Nov 1, 2013 Traits give you an extra advantage in the match. Example traits: See the next 3 cards when using an Oracle. Make opponent use Cannons on their own cards. Sword can steal ALL suits, even those you already have. Once you've unlocked a trait (first one at level 9 I think) you can equip a trait before the match. These traits are consumables, and you use the in game gold to buy more. Eventually the opponents begin to have these traits equipped as well, making them incredibly difficult to defeat without using a trait yourself. I have also heard that eventually you begin to face opponents that have TWO traits equipped! Which would be nigh impossible to face without a trait of you own. That is the "pay wall". You can either choose the free path of grinding low level opponents for gold to buy more traits, or choose the quicker IAP path, it is your choice. Braybot Member Oct 2, 2013 10 0 0 #19 Braybot, Nov 1, 2013 Dev here! Thanks for checking the game out and glad to hear you seem to be enjoying it! It's good to get feedback on the in-app purchases as it's always a challenge for us to find the right balance between what's fun for players, what feels right for gameplay, and what will allow us to keep making games! We tried to balance the game so that if you play smart, you earn gold at a fast enough rate to compete with the harder opponents. (FYI, You'll unlock the ability to use dual traits as well at level 15) Here are some tips that might help: 1) save traits for when you need them! If you use all your traits on early opponents with no traits or minor traits, you'll be caught off gaurd when you really need them 2) there's strategy to which traits do best based on tournament rules & your opponent's traits... choose carefully 3) save gold to unlock both traits when you level up. Even if you can't do it every time it will help a lot 4) return to early tournaments to 3-star them. If you look at the chest it shows what overall score you need, and what the reward is. The chests that give you one of each trait can be valuable if you win them once you've unlocked a lot of traits. I'd be happy to answer any questions. Let me know what you think! Chris Bray Stardock Mobile nkarafo Well-Known Member Mar 2, 2011 860 9 18 #20 nkarafo, Nov 1, 2013 I see... So, that's the catch. In the start the game is very nice BUT if it's getting so much difficult later on, it's so disappointing... It will become eventually unbalanced because the enemies have always their traits (infinite) but you have limited use of them, e.g. you earn three traits and if you cannot win the enemy at these 3 times, then you will lose them and you will have to grind all over again to earn points to unlock them. So, maybe I will return to my favorite "Orions 2" which is not so luck-based and it has no IAPs and no ads and it requires a strategy. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
