Armageddon, Ancient wars, however cartoon wars is the best, it just does not have a save option

I would say Crystal Wars - it's the only one of this type I've continued playing. Castle War would be a close second, mainly because each unit can have special abilities!

might be worth a look at Trenches or Warlord Skirmish. Not quite the same, but just worth the look as decent games.
