I had to struggle to not rage quit this game as I tried to figure out some of the puzzles. If I had originally played with the companion app, does it give you better clues?

Leia, it doesn't really give play clues. It's useful for the end game, and for giving information as to why some things want what they ask you to do/bring them. It's useful for a second playthrough, but wouldn't have given you any more insight into the puzzle you were facing at the time.

I did have to look at a few hints here and there myself. But I'm glad I used the minimum help I could take, even though I long ago lost all patience for puzzles that take longer than 2 minutes to figure out or do.

Agreed. This is a fantastic complement but won't be helping you with any puzzle solving. That being said, play through to end game for the code...
