Released a few days ago on the iPad, The War of Eustrath has quickly distinguished itself as the only turn-based, story-driven, tactical JRPG available in the App Store. I'm sure that big fans of games like Fire Emblem or Super Robot Taisen may find it a bit middle-of the-road, but considering how few games like this there are on the platform, The War of Eustrath came as something of a revelation. I've been playing this for many hours, and can say that, while not perfect (what game is?), it's easily one of my favorite purchases of the year. Thanks to Eduku, we now have some news from the developer: Needless to say, I think this is great news for iPhone/iPod Touch RPG gamers. I'm including the App Info of the iPad version to give people an idea about the game. I'm been meaning to shoot some video but I haven't had the chance yet: when I do, I'll post it both here and in the iPad section thread. The War of Eustrath HD iQubi Inc. *** Price Down! The results of battles and choices YOU make in the story affect the story and even the ending of this game. Join the group of brave young soldiers. And see how the war ends with your own eyes. Background The stage of this game is the world called "Eustrath". Even though it has advanced technologies it differs from Earth by the existence of Elementals. Like magic in a typical fantasy world, the power of Elementals is accepted and utilized in everyday life. One of them are fighting machines called "Elemental GEARs". And there are also fighting machines called "Mechanical GEARs" whose power comes from the pure mechanical energy not elemental energy. These GEARs (both Elemental and Mechanical) are natural element of Eustrath. People accept them as part of their life and mainly utilize them for warfares. Throughout the history of "Eustrath", there were three great wars recorded. This game is an attempt to revive one of those wars. The heroine of the game is a country girl "Tiana". You can control her and her companions to build the history of Eustrath. Features - Over 50 campaign stages are playable with several endings including a special one. - More than 20 unique characters and over 40 units. - Special abilities make battles more fun to play. - Upgrade GEARs using various items. - Intuitive User Interface. - Many awesome illustrations in game. - Highly detailed graphics. It reminds me of Fire Emblem, my favorite strategy game after Advance Wars. Plus, it sounds like one of the few iPhone games with a good storyline, so I'll definitely get this. Johno Well-Known Member May 29, 2009 264 0 0 Pennsylvania #4 Johno, Jun 8, 2010 All I can say is hell yes! I saw this on the ipad releases and simply thought Fire Emblem on the iPad. Which I dont have. I'm really happy this is coming to the iPod. The screenshots look great and Fire Emblem was my favorite game on the Gameboy. Can't wait! squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,551 1,080 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #5 squarezero, Jun 8, 2010 Most people haven't, which is a shame. I don't think the story is going to win any awards (it's pretty soapy and melodramatic) but it does get you to care about the character and provides a decent context for the action. The standouts here are the combat and leveling systems, which are both deep and easy to understand. The controls are excellent too, and you can play a single mission for 45 minutes or so and be entertained throughout. (At 50 missions, plus alternate endings, I'm guessing there's about 20-30 hours of gameplay). We'll see how they manage to cram the interface into the much smaller iPhone/iPod screen. I also hope that they work on the English localization -- the dialog is okay, but the opening intro is pretty bad. Somerandomdude Well-Known Member May 31, 2009 5,195 0 0 Doing nothing of importance. Somewhere #6 Somerandomdude, Jun 8, 2010 Oh God... is this one of those "All your base are belong to us" moments? But I'll still be picking this up regardless. Considering I've scrapped my plans for an iPad after hearing that the iPhone 4 will be $200 for a 16gb, and that my current phone is sorta messed up, I'll be getting the iPhone 4, so this is great news for me. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,551 1,080 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #7 squarezero, Jun 8, 2010 Let's just say I've seen worse, but I've definitely seen better. As I mentioned, the dialog is not that bad; there's just a short intro after the first mission that's pretty bad. Considering that it took me about 3 minutes to read it, and I've been playing for 5 hours plus so far, it's a pretty small part of the overall experience. Somerandomdude Well-Known Member May 31, 2009 5,195 0 0 Doing nothing of importance. Somewhere #8 Somerandomdude, Jun 8, 2010 Hang on, are you playing the iPhone version, or do you have an iPad? And yes, I think it's a great game -- as I said, one of my favorite so far this year. I just don't want to mislead anyone into thinking the story itself is great. I remark upon it because there are so few tactical games in the App Store that are actually story driven (I think of Rogue Planet, Battle for Wesnoth, Command and Conquer, Mecho War, etc as strategic, rather than tactical). Somerandomdude Well-Known Member May 31, 2009 5,195 0 0 Doing nothing of importance. Somewhere #10 Somerandomdude, Jun 8, 2010 Yeah, so it's more of a character-based strategy is what you're saying? From the sounds of things, it's similar to Fire Emblem (as you already mentioned) and compares most closely to Transformers G1, where instead of huge armies, you control a few unique but somewhat powerful characters. Am I understanding it correctly? And congrats on getting an iPad. Is it worth it or should I just save for the iPhone 4? Drexra Well-Known Member Nov 29, 2009 344 0 0 Student Colorado #11 Drexra, Jun 8, 2010 Fire Emblem and Super Robot Taisen? I was JUST thinking I needed one of these on the itouch! The difference for me is that in a strategy game, you spend a lot of time preparing for a fight: building troops, seizing towns for supplies, etc. In a tactical game, you start with the combat, then level up and upgrade your characters in a much more RPG-like way. I got the iPad for free (it's a long story), so I can't say how much it's actually worth. As a device, it's awesome, I just don't think is really "necessary." Put it another way, I'm not sure if I would have bought one for myself, but I'm certain that I will be upgrading to an iPhone 4. Somerandomdude Well-Known Member May 31, 2009 5,195 0 0 Doing nothing of importance. Somewhere #13 Somerandomdude, Jun 8, 2010 Transformers had some upgrading in battles by using Energon to buy a single upgrade that boosted attack and defense, but no other real RPG elements to the game. Now this game will be filling that tactical RPG void that was there since I had Fire Emblem 6 (forgot the name... it was a translated Japan-only game) on my iPod with gpSPhone. I'll be buying this on release. Eduku Well-Known Member Dec 5, 2009 1,291 1 0 London #14 Eduku, Jun 8, 2010 Last edited: Jun 8, 2010 Ah, I was wondering when this thread was going to be made. Obviously it's an insta-buy from me If the description is correct, then the length of the game seems spot on. It's a shame about the translation issues, but hopefully they'll work on that in time for the iPhone release. The art looks really good and polished though. How do you rate the story? Obviously I'm not expecting it to be of Fire Emblem quality or anything but a decent story would be nice. Also, as a really small, nitpicky point, maybe the thread title could be changed to SRPG, which is the recognised name of the sub-genre. Really minor point though. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,551 1,080 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #15 squarezero, Jun 8, 2010 Unfortunately, I can't change the thread name without dev help. Perhaps someone will read this and switch the J for an S. On the story: it's more complex than the standard "evil demon must be defeated: find crystals," and it does create memorable heroes and villains; as I wrote on the iPad thread, there's a palpable sense of loss as well, and on the first ten chapters at least you're on the losing side of the war and basically on the run. I also like the fact that the heroes include both veterans and neophytes, so that you can get some background without the dreaded "as you well know, John..." type dialogue. There's a soap-operaish aspect to it, as two of the female characters are in love with the head of the squad and kind of competing for his attention -- that gets annoying. It doesn't have anywhere near the kind of depth and complexity of something like Chrono Trigger, but it's probably on par with run-of-the-mill TV anime. Compared to most other RPGs on this platform, it's epic . As I said before, veterans of this RPG genre will have a better sense of how The War of Eustrath rates from a story perspective. From this noob's perspective, it's doing a good job keeping me engaged in the action. What kind of absurd thought process could possibly lead any developer to seriously believe that releasing a game first on a format that requires more work and is only accessible to 5% of potential customers instead of the one that requires less work and is accessible to 95% of potential customers is by any stretch of the imagination a good idea? I hate to say this, but the iPad has hurt iPhone gaming far more than I ever thought it would. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,551 1,080 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #20 squarezero, Jun 8, 2010 Actually, in a game like this the iPad requires less work than the iPhone, since the extra screen space makes it much easier to design an effective interface. Making a strategy/tactics game work on a tiny screen is a much more difficult problem than scanning artwork at a higher resolution. Besides Mirror's Edge, Knights of the Phantom Castle (which is decent but nowhere near as good as The War of Eustrath), and Sam and Max (great game, but a bit of a technical mess), I can't think of another iPad "exclusive" game of consequence right now. In the meantime, there have been over a dozen essential iPhone/iPod touch releases. Frankly, I can't see how the iPad has hurt iPhone gaming at all.
