  2. This is just an awesome, awesome article. I don't think anyone else has posted such a great insight to how GDC can help an indie.

Great articles. So did you think exhibiting at GDC was worth it, or would have you gotten the same out of it it if you just had a regular pass and attended all of the events?

    Edit: Reorganized for easier reading.

For us, it was worth it. The education what we needed as a team. I think for everyone it will vary depending on their long term goals. We definitely could have gone to all the additional events without exhibiting.

    Here are perks for exhibiting:

GDC Play cames with 5 expo passes and 3 exhibitor passes. We were able to give out to industry friend under our company name. Nice business relationship networking tool.

Publishers came to us to ask questions. We could then spend some time to answer them. If we didn't exhibit, talking to publishers would be much harder. Knowing what they are interested in will help us focus our design on our next game.

Lots of advertising businesses approached us, we were able to ask hard questions like, "what differentiates your business from your competitors?" Over 90% of all marketing businesses that approached us were structured for freemium advertising.

Some companies talked about how "non-incentivized installs" are higher quality customers and are willing to spend more on IAP.

Students came up and congratulated us for launching. It was a feel good moment. We could share what we could and exchange emails with them.

The bad part of exhibiting was that we couldn't go to the conferences. Spending $3250 made us focus on our kiosk. There were a ton of good talks we could have also learned from.

Talking to other people that also had kiosks was very cool. We met GamesByMo and Discord Games. Awesome people.

By the way, final 4 days on an awesome kickstarter: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1445624543/anne

Discord guys also did an awesome job using GDC as a kickstarter platform. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/discordgames/chasm

Exhibiting gave us a different "view". We were much more hyper-sensitive about what was happening. How other businesses used the medium, etc.
