    ouch, 25% of the royalties...

Apple takes 30% of royalties already...

so that leaves the devs with only 45% instetad of 70% of the profit going to them.

i dunno about that, the Unreal dev kit better ****ing program itself for that kind of moolah.

I wonder if he meant 25% of the 70% you get? Unlikely...

Game devs will likely be turned off by the 45% they rake in instead of the 70%, if that is the case. I am no marketing specialist though so I have no idea. But Apple's 30 + this 25 is pretty rough. But the Unreal Kit has to be hawt to work with, and I can only imagine the amazing games that will come of it.

Don't you still have to pay 90$ to apple to play your game on your iPod?

Nobody is going to want to put that much effort into making a hit game if they're only receiving 45% of the profits. That's ridiculous. 10 maybe 15% is far more reasonable.

-55% of profits * 1,000,000 sales= only 450,000, whereas 30%*1,000,00 sales=700,000...thing is, they let you develop the game for free, maybe send it to some people and if you KNOW it's gonna sell good then you can sell. I don't know, if I were a dev I would at least try it.

    yeah those royalty cuts bite.....BUT

It beats the pure hell out of playing endless rounds of Tower defense games and dumbass games where you are flicking virtual trash into a virtual bucket.

This kit buys QUALITY to the device in general. Personally, I think it is a 'ground-floor' opportunity to develop using proven tools to make something in the privacy of your own home and/or office that could be truly great. All thumbs up for me!
I will purchase my kit on Day One.

Yes, but there's reasons why those tower defense games get done. They're faster to develop, and cost less to make too. Can't imagine the amount of effort needed for making a game like Infinity blade, which probably is near console game budgets.

    Yes.

But, isnt that the whole point?
The point for releasing the kit is to introduce a higher level of QUALITY.

I didn't say it would be easy or that it wouldnt come without an extra investment in time. But, with the proper sacrifices over time, we will see an entirely new generation of games that will render Infinity Blade's quality....normal. The reason it is seen as 'magnificent' now is because it stands alone in terms of it's quality. However, with the kit in the hands of many, the playing field levels out. And, Unreal gets some extra dough. Gamers get almost console quality games. Apple I-devices get an evolved generation of games. And, everybody wins!

Yes, that's ok, but games get more expensive to make too. Barrier of entry gets increases again.

Hopefully, with more games using Unreal Engine (it's a gamer name brand after all. Proven to power the biggest AAA console titles) on iOS, the developers who utilize it could charge a higher price to offset the royalty cut.

All they would need to do is charge 25% more to offset the cost. So rather than more 99cent gems, we'll see more 1.99 Unreal powered gems.

This is a life saver for developers who need a selling point. Unreal engine automatically gains notice.

Developers often are hurt by a low price ceiling in the AppStore. If there was ever a guardian spirit to raise the pesky low asking prices, it's this engine.

Look at this optimistically. You get to use the best tools, it's free marketing, you can charge more by using it, you gain notice from gamers...

I don't see how this engine and it's royalties are a bad thing.

On the ipad maybe, the app store no way. Even the new ea bad company is being sold for a dollar. The app storeis too far gone and customers to used to the low prices and sales for it to abe hope but take a look at most ipad games. They launch at ten bucks a pop and dont et sles as often or esp $1 sales.

I hack, that's my occupation. I get paid to rock t

The Unreal engine is a very good engine, but the graphics from a game using it is only as good as the artists working on the project. Using a big name engine like this does not guarantee your game will be good and look good.

I will likely play around with this a little, but I'll be sticking with my own codebase where I have full access to the source. I also would prefer to use OGRE as it's open source and can do just as much, if not more, than Unreal IMO.
