Oh dear, I'm actually really enjoying this. It's stupidly silly. You really can't take it seriously but there's a genuine game underneath it and it's not just your average F2P matcher. You're not going to be handling any depth similar to The Movies but there's quite a bit of variety and still some freedom to experiment.

It's no 10,000,000 but if you like decent matchers and can put up with obvious freemium elements then you might have fun with it. I'll certainly be playing more down the line.

The main downside so far has been the film poster of Magic Mike starring Nicholas Cage. That one's burned into the retinas...

Yup, seems to be a New Zealand soft launch at the moment. Judging by some of Bandai Namco's other soft launches, this could be unavailable worldwide for quite some time.

I have to admit that i'm really enjoying it, too.
You give the movies individual flair (story, location, leading actors) by your matches and get a short summary and a matching poster. And these are hilariously crazy and fugly.

Pity that the game in general looks kind of fugly and thus feels unfinished. I had trouble unlocking one of the later levels, as the game skipped the end of a level screen and didn't award me my won stars.

This is growing into one of my favourite free games on iOS, I really did not expect that.

For the basic gameplay, you're matching various tiles to build up enough of the different currencies to buy the cards along the bottom of the screen. There are five categories of cards representing actors, roles, scenes, sets, and marketing. Once you have enough of the required currency to buy a card, it's placed into one of the right hand slots - to maximise your chances of a great film, you need 2 actors, a role each, one set, two scenes, and as many marketing options as possible.

There are complications to take into consideration too as each card has its strengths and weaknesses. Slim Carry (the game is punalicious) is great in comedies but a poor choice for horror or adventures. You need to pick a genre or two and find the best combination of cards. Matching green tiles gives you new cards to choose from though you can only hold five in your hand at any time. There are also subtler statistics for the better cards like Veteran for experienced actors and insanity for...pretty much only Nicholas Cage. They can pair up to add extra bonuses in the end game.

Some of the match ups feel questionable and the score for your movie can feel arbitrary. Giving a role great for the genre to an actor that fits it well can sometimes lower your score which is a real shame. Aside from that though, it's pretty smart and fair. You'll succeed more on clever matching than luck though obviously with match 3s, there's always an element of fortuitousness.

You unlock new cards with every level you beat but you can also buy booster packs with the stars earned. Levels are ranked out of three stars which is generally easy to max. Twenty stars will buy you a pack of five cards so it's not a common occurrence but often enough to keep your deck feeling fresh. You can also purchase single cards for 10 stars which are generally very powerful. Getting doubles of cards in booster packs levels them up, increasing their effect on the movie.

There are no ads at all in Cinemazing. The only IAPs are for the stars, 99c for 10 and so on. They're so easy to earn in game though and the levels so far haven't been troubling so it's genuinely option for once. There are boosts you can buy using the in-game currency that can't be bought for real money. They're largely over-priced though, but at least they're not in your face in any way.

It's creative, fun and very, very silly. The UI and game in general is pretty ugly but it's not really a concern when I'm enjoying it as much as I am. The silly movie summaries and posters are worth playing for alone, I've been pretty tempted to share the one with Nicholas Cage in a swimsuit!

If you like matching puzzlers then this is one of my favourites. Just be wary of installing updates as I'm convinced they'll add in more F2P mechanics as it's incredibly free of IAPs, ads and other unpleasantness. If you have a New Zealand account and/or a fondness for the genre then I really think it's worth having a go.

Developer here

Glad to see everyone digging the very early build of the game in soft launch! The full launch version of the game is slated to launch this summer and will have a ton of awesome new features you guys haven't even seen yet. Lots of cool new stuff and new ways to create movies.

Our freemium philosophy is that we want to give everyone a great experience whether they spend money or not. We'll be working hard to carefully calibrate the game balance and costs of buying new content. I think, like the rest of everyone who plays iOS free games, we know how greedy some of these "games" get and how annoying some of these paywalls are. We're trying to build the game system to feel more like digital Legos where purchases add new ways to create.

Please keep sharing your feedback, we love it. One important thing to share, the final game will actually have a different title. Here's the logo:
