Hi TA So, now that E3 is done, I'm getting back to work on SciFly 2. I'm still not 100% sure I will be adding this feature, but I think I'm going to add arcade-mode challenges to the game. Right now the game is all about the island conquest mode which is sorta the "campaign." The arcade challenges would be a bunch of small mini-games. I figured, if I have the framework for a flying game, why not add some fun flying mini-games? This would also be a little throwback to the original SciFly which was basically mini-game based. So far the two ideas I have for mini games are wave-survival and ring "racing". Wave survival would be the standard survive as many waves of enemies before you get destroyed game play. Ring "racing" would be a mode where you have to fly through a set course of rings as quickly as possible. So does anyone have any ideas for these arcade modes? Or ideas for new arcade modes? I'd really like to have more than just two modes, so I'd love to get some feedback from TA Thanks! p.s. if you don't know what SciFly 2 is like, you're welcome to view Arn's hands-on video/impressions: http://toucharcade.com/2009/06/04/e3-early-gameplay-video-of-scifly-2/
Maybe: CTF (Capture the Flag) mode, where you must fly to the enemys island and fly through a ring to take the flag and then bring the flag back to your island and fly through the ring there. (If the flag is still there (at the ring), you get one point)! mabe a better CTF description from UT 2004: The other game modes in the list wuld be nice, too. Deathmatch: Fly around and kill enemys on one big island.
a Boss. a really big Spaceship or something like that, (or a demon) which you have to shoot alone or with your friends.
i like the CTF idea, i would like to see a multiplayer co-op where u and other people have to shoot down bots, if possible (probably too hard tho)
Two Ideas: Gem Collector - You fly about the island/s and have to find gems kind of like in Glyder but possibly with a certain time limit. Transporter - Kind of like Gem Collector but you collect and move "cargo" from place to place. They aren't spectacular ideas but I think they'd work pretty well. Wave Survival and Ring Racing sound good though.
Take a look at Biplane some good ideas in this one. http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=304891089&mt=8 I always thought this game was alot of fun. or Biiplane http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=295099855&mt=8 I think this game would be fun but all you do is go in circles. I have suggested to this developer to make this more open playing field with the same game play and to maybe add other things to shoot at. So take a look at both games for ideas. Thanks, Rad
Just had an idea: culd you make an option in the game so that you get Unreal Tornament sounds like: -Double Kill -Multikill -... -HOLY SH*T! That wuld be funny
I don't know if this would be possible with the current game engine (which seems to be set in "arenas"), but perhaps a minigame that hearkens to stuff like iCopter or those flight games where you have to avoid obstacles. The control of the plane would be "on rails" going forward at all times in this mode and obstacles would appear ahead that you'd have to dodge. Might make for a nice minigame.
There will be a deathmatch mode won't there? Something where you can set the kill limit or time limit and just play a quick game. Very similar to the original with more options. As for mini games, I like the ones that have been suggested. Maybe a seek and destroy where an object is hidden randomly in the area and you have to go destroy it. You had discussed multiplayer way back when 3.0 was revealed. Do you still have plans to include that?
There could be a VIP mode in which there is another plane (helpless) that you have to protect from point A to point B. During the travel, there would be lots of ships that challenge you. The goals are- A) survive B) see how much health you can have left over for you and the VIP C) See how many enemies you can eliminate. There could also be some kind of game mode that involves flying right above the water, maybe just flying through rings (like the ring racing idea, just an alternate mode), but it would be difficult to not hit the water and lose. This idea could definitely be expanded.
Wow, thanks for all the great responses so far! Here's my thoughts on what you guys have said so far. Deathmatch (@renton @Coral) I've thought about having a mode similar to ring-racing where there are a set number of targets that you have to fly around to destroy. I was actually thinking of having literal targets (like red and white circles). As for actual deathmatch, this would be pretty similar to wave survival. Maybe once I do the coding for wave survival, this will be easy to implement. Mutliplayer (@Coral, @Der-Kleine, @Sambo110, @Vester) I currently don't have "plans" to include multiplayer in the initial release of SciFly 2. That said, I do have a *HUGE* desire to create a multiplayer dogfighting game. I just don't have the resources right now to do it alone. One day I will And, if I do make a multiplay game, CTF will definitely be the focus of it. Gem Collector @Palfince This is actually how I envisioned the ring based mode. The rings will be around islands and you have to collect them quickly. Transporter (@Palfince, @veecheech) Interesting, I like the idea. Maybe combine this with veecheech's idea for VIP mode... Obstacles (@spiffyone) Well I wouldn't make the controls on rails, but I definitely want to add a gauntlet-like obstacle sets for the ring racing. Should be fun Double Kill rewards (@Der-Kleine) This seems like it should work well, I'll try to find the time to add it. @Rad Those are definitely great games. Especially Biplane (with one i) @Chronical I don't think I'll have time to implement that type of thing... but I've wanted to. It just takes a lot of time to program... Okay, I think that's everyone. Thanks again! Keep it coming if you have anymore ideas Oh and here's an image of what I've got so far for the ring racing. As you can see, just getting started. So it'll be a while before I can get the new ideas in-game. But, I definitely intend to.
I know that idea... wasn't that from Crash Bandicoot.... . Hmmm... Deathmatch is good, but team deathmatch wuld be cool . something where you fly in a group of five abit like this (doesen't have to be with real players (multiplayer)):
I've been coding away and I'm making tons of progress! I decided to combine the "ring-racing" idea into a game mode called Gauntlet (as we sorta discussed in the thread). So instead of just rings, there will be a track with obstacles that you have to fly through. Also, some rings will actually be red and white targets which you have to destroy instead of just fly through. Wave survival mode is also coming along well. Functionally, it's pretty much there. Lots of polish left for both modes, though. So far, these modes are turning out to be seriously fun. Definitely just one of these modes has more value than all of the original SciFly put together. Not to mention the much more massive Conquest mode. (haha don't mean to sound like a car salesman) I think the next mode I will work on is the VIP mode. I'll probably call this Escort. I think the Escort and Gauntlet modes will each have 10 unique levels. You'll be able to get a bronze, silver or gold star on each level. But, I can't figure out how to make different levels out of the wave survival mode since the different waves are basically different levels. So, I think instead of a star, there will just be a record of waves cleared. If I have time, I'll create a global ranking system. I'm not sure if I'll do this though, it caused me a LOT of problems in SciFly 1 :-( *bad memories*
That looks awesome! It sounds like SciFly 2 is going to have tons of content. I also had a look at the Design Document and the customisation and sheer amount of islands sounds insane, you're really going for a fully fledged $10 iPhone game here.
It is used in a lot more than just crash bandicoot. It is a common gameplay idea used in tony hawk, crazy snowboard, many racing games, etc. I know it is nothing original, but it is a pretty easy to apply concept and works well.
How about target practice. it would just be the red and white targets, but placed at random throughout a certain area, and you just have to hit them all in the fastest time.
