Anyways, I'd suggest Space Invaders Infinity Gene (4.99) and Lightning Fighter (0.99) .

If you can't play CAVE's shmups, these are the best three of the genre.

    In alphabetical order:

Air attack - 3D graphics make it stand out from slow paced shumps *note: not a bullet hell

Apache Overkill - horizontal Flash game style shump.

Fast Striker - Vertical BULLET HELL that runs on 'not specified' devices (presumably all). This is probably the one you'd want. Oh and the iTune store images of the game look bad. The background are beautiful and the bosses simply look great.

Wave: against every beat - Hard to describe this one. Like Dodonpachi, but different... I would recommend this one if you have $0.99 to spare though.

I know I have no right to discredit your opinion, but I honestly thought Wave was one of the worst shmups I've ever played in my life. Well, it's actually free right now, so why not download it I guess.

    rRootage. Classic Kenta Cho.

I'm really enjoying Wave, it's got a few bugs that need ironing and retina wouldn't go amiss, but it's pretty enjoyable.

Isn't Wave free at the moment? Open Feint promotion?

Another vote for Fast Striker. Yes, you can't shoot backwards (as you can in the original), it's on landscape mode (which makes sense for the game but bothers many people), and there's no way to save progress (one phone call, back to the beginning). Even with all that, it's the closest you're going to get to an all-device Cave-style bullet hell shooter in the App Store.

Gotta agree, rRootage and Noiz2sa are the best shmups on the App Store IMO. rRootage has an Ikaruga mode, which might explain its awesomeness :D

Space Invaders is a fantastic game, but NO bullet hell, not at all.

    Phoenix and then rRootage, yes.

    Lol what the hell?
Well, most people associate bullet hell with shmups, so they're generally synonyms around here. More people call CAVE's shooters shmups than bullet hell.

But there is a huge difference, and the name itself already makes it clear.
Following this logic: If somebody asks for a good platformer besides Sonic, you could say Doodle Jump. Bullet hell is a bullet hell and just a sub genre of shmups. And I think, dssed didn't ask for shmups in general, he asked for bullet hell. No?

I can't bring myself to buy DR or Esp II... Is there anything better or good that compares to them?

My list in order of preference would be:

    1. Lightning Fighter
    2. Phoenix (I know you already have this one, but for general reference...)
    3. rRootage
    4. Assault Squadron
    5. Fast Striker
    6. Astro Wings
    7. Icarus-X
    8. WAVE

All are comfortably defined as bullet hells and worth having. WAVE apparently is free, and I know rRootage has a very good free version (the retina upgrade is nice, though it won't do much for you if you're not on a 4th gen.)

    Fair enough then.

I replace SIIG with Fast Striker for in that case. It's also only $0.99 at the moment.
