I think it will be a firmware update because the iPad is getting ios4 in fall as well. So why not kill two birds with one stone.
Isn't it integrated inteo the apps you buy as much as it is an app on its own? In that case a firmware update shouldn't be necessary. Much like OpenFeint or Plus+.
Didn't apple say that it was coming later on this year in the fall? And I don't think many games are planning on using it yet, they will probably wait for its release to see what all it can do before deciding whether or not to use it. it probably won't be easy to get used to...apple's shown a lot of failure when it comes to large scale changes, like iphone 4 preorders
Because I'm under an NDA or 2 (as an apple developer) I can say, Game Center looks pretty neat, and has a lot to offer. Like everything, it wont have many games at the start, and there isn't a releasedate just yet. But it looks promising!
That's true, I am looking forward to it. I like Plus+ and Openfeint and AGON and everything, but if Gamecenter can bring all the users and features from all of those into something that actually works, I'll love it. I just hope that as a user, I won't lose all my openfeint points and plus awards when gamecenter starts. apple can be kinda stubborn at times, and I wouldn't be surprised if they got rid of all the game networking things and made everyone use theirs.
I think Openfeint and Plus+ will still exist, but since Gamecenter will be part of the Iphone SDK, I think more startup developers will start using that first.
It isn't out yet. We need a sticky or something for that. There's nothing particularly impressive about the notion of GameCenter anyway, other than the possibility that Apple might provide centralized servers that will allow devs who otherwise couldn't afford to maintain their own private servers to incorporate global online functionality into their games. I'm not even 100% certain about this, to be honest. It's only what I'd heard. Everything else offered through GameCenter, who really cares. The achievement system GameCenter features will be as empty and dilluted as Openfeint. Probably even worse. My general opinion of GameCenter is "meh", at best.

Will Game Center have online save backups? I sure hope so. I don't need to keep most of the games on my phone but I'm extremely hesitant to delete any titles because I'd lose the save data (and have before). I've heard rumblings that OF supports online saves (sweet!) but any news on Game Center? I figure more devs will implement GC, so there's a better chance more of my saves will be backed up there. Thoughts? Speaking of OF, any idea which games will support saves? When it'll start working? I know QuickHook is on the list...
