Yep, finished hard with no items and no heroes; BUT that was starting from my existing save with maxed out upgrade points. Doing it from a 'clean start' is proving impossible. Also, that was just the normal campaign levels; the bonus levels were super difficult on hard even maxed out and I haven't beaten them even with a hero iirc.

For me its just no item

It's not that I hate heroes, but just that I've beaten the game so many times already that I'm striving for a harder challenge. I'm not that great of a player, I resorted to watching YouTube replays of some of you experts to finally beat some of the levels on normal.

I'm trying to do it all on my own on hard with this clean start; but doubt I'm good enough and will likely need your videos eventually.

This game does not even have a "resume" button. O_o
I paused the game, then accidentally clicked "quit", since it's so close to the "X" button. Instead of resuming where I left off in the level, it restarted the level. No confirmation, nothing. Wow. Oh and guess what? The items I used in that level are gone too.
Every other tower defense I've played automatically saves your progress in the level. If you quit the level to go to the main menu, then select that level again, you start where you left off.
At least add a freaking "are you sure you want to quit? Progress will be lost" confirmation window? So my half an hour of tackling an extremely hard level wasn't for nothing?
