(lol I meant to post this in the general games discussion, whoops! mod?)

It’s a shame that good ios rhythm games aren’t given good light. A quick search of ios rhythm games on google and the appstore gave me crap. It’s amazing how good titles get overshadowed by poor outdated games like Tap Tap Revenge or Rock Band. Here’s a list of worthwhile rhythm games for ios. The list is directed mainly at ipad users but also can apply to ipods/iphones. Also, price is disregarded.

Keep in mind, these are traditional rhythm games in the sense of hit a note, get points, as opposed to games with music (a la Beat Sneak Bandits, Bit Trip Series, Dropchord, etc.)

    ReRave: ReRave iTunes Link

Rerave is a rhythm game from people who previously worked on Stepmania and the like. Unlike most rhythm games it also factors placement accuracy as well as timing. The music is varied, and charts are fun and dynamic.

Jubeat/Jukebeat: Jukebeat iTunes Link , Jubeat iTunes Link

Imagine musical whack-a-mole. This is Jubeat, a rhythm game that is easy to learn, but takes a long time to master. Gameplay is smooth and really fun. It sports the biggest songlist of any game, and by big I mean hundreds of constant new songs (JP).

Reflec Beat/Reflec Beat +: Reflec Beat + iTunes Link , Reflec Beat iTunes Link

Whereas Jubeat is to whack-a-mole, Reflec Beat is to air hockey. Reflec Beat does away with standard lanes and has targets come at you at all angles to tap once it hits the line. It’s super fun, and also has an ever growing songlist.

Osu! Stream: Osu! Stream iTunes Link

Playing like Ouendan, Osu has you tapping notes as a ring encloses them. The theme is very simple and minimalistic, and the songs are all really fun. Unfortunately, the scoring system is very outdated as it relies on combo and early mistakes. but for sheer gameplay itself, it’s a wonderful rhythm game with a lot of polish.

Tone Sphere: Tone Sphere iTunes Link

Tone Sphere is a gorgeous game with with excellent music and style. At first it may seem like and Osu clone, but what sets it apart is dynamic charts that visually represent the music. It’s an incredible experience that is very fun.

    Rhythmix: Rhythmix iTunes Link

A DJ Technika clone, Rhythmix differentiates itself by adding new notes such as the flick. While overall it’s pretty good, but doesn’t compare anywhere near Technika itself, especially with the lack of song choices. Still, unless you have Q, it's the only one of its kind in the app store.

    Cytus: Cytus iTunes Link

A game similar to Technika as well, this instead has a bar moving up and down. The songs are excellent and the gameplay is fun. The timing windows are way too large though, and it is almost too easy to do well on a song. That plus sync issues get in the way of this being a top rhythm game. However, the music is amazing and the developers constantly pump out new music to the game.

    Rhythm Control 2: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/rhythm-control-2/id498660240?mt=8

One of my personal favorites (hmmm I wonder why), Rhythm control is a hybrid of Jubeat and Osu; 6 stationary spots that you tap when a ring approaches the center. While I love nearly everything about it, some songs suffer from offset issues which make it annoying to play. Other than that, it's one of the most polished rhythm games out there. Gameplay is fluid, and the developers have been quite active in releasing new songs.

    Deemo: Deemo iTunes Link

From the makers of Cytus comes Deemo; a very pretty and very accessible rhythm game. Everything about it oozes with style, from art, to the music, to the subtle story. Like the previous game, offsets can be a bit weird, but it's definitely improved upon the old system, and the tighter timing windows make it more challenging for veterans. However, the scoring system isn't forgiving; as (not confirmed) combos and

Beat Gather: Beat Gather iTunes Link

An interesting concept for Konami to release. In this game, you use your own music to create charts to play. Gameplay is standard scrolling notes with some swipes, and direction changes. You can share creations with others which is nice if you're part of a tight knit community. However, making charts is very rudimentary. You essentially tap what you want on a playthough, and what you tapped gets repeated back for future playthroughs.

Pulse: Volume One: Pulse: Volume One iTunes Link

Don't expect much in the difficulty department, but do expect a beautiful game with stunning music. The gameplay is an area with which ring pulse outward. You tap a note when the ring hits it. While the replay value may be limited due to the small tracklist, it still is a fun game to relax and enjoy.

EDIT: ran out of words in first post so changing this to part 2

    Symphonica: Symphonica iTunes Link

Square Enix has launched a pretty interesting title. With gameplay nearly identical to Theatrhythm's except on one lane, it distinguishes itself with classical music, and a story line. Don't be fooled though by it's pretty art, for the most part, notes are offsync by noticeable margin. For a casual player, it's not something to worry about, but for a rhythm player, you'll find getting perfect scores near impossible with how you'll have to adjust. Still, it's worth a play through, if not for the music itself.

Taiko no Tatsujin +: Taiko no Tatsujin + iTunes Link

Taiko is a well established drumming rhythm game in Japan. This version contains many songs from other releases, and plays and feels great! It lacks the depth of the DS versions with regards to unlocks, but still finds itself in a comfortable spot with song packs constantly added.

Miku Flick/Miku Flick 2 Miku Flick iTunes Link, Miku Flick 2 iTunes Link

Miku Flick is a rhythm game based on the hit pop sensation Hatsune Miku. As one would expect, the songs are all vocaloid. Gameplay involves "flicking" arrows that pop up on a panel. No Japanese knowledge is required to play. Still, it's very simple and the beats don't feel as sync as one would hope. If you are a Miku fan I'd download it for the music alone, however the shallow gameplay can get boring after a few plays.

    Theatrhythm: Theatrhythm iTunes Link

Theatrhythm found itself in an awkward position upon release due to its pricing model (which isn't really that bad when you think about it). Regardless, Theatrhythm is an excellent game. The controls are super smooth, and the game just feels right. Perhaps the biggest grab to the title is the music; all final fantasy tunes, most of which are by the amazing Nobuo Uematsu. A 3DS sequel, Curtain Call, is due for Spring 2014 so it may be possible an update or new release is bound for ios.

    CrossxBeats: CrossxBeats iTunes Link

Have you ever wanted to hours at a time between each song you play? Me neither. What could have been an excellent game is hindered by an annoying timing system which has been so common in freemium games. There's no way out of it as even buying tickets is a temporary fix. It's a shame because the gameplay is quite fun, but as it stands, it's not worth playing.

Groove Coaster/Groove Coaster Zero: Groove Coaster iTunes Link , Groove Coaster Zero iTunes Link

Groove Coaster is a gorgeous game which has a retro feel. Gameplay is a simple tap/swipe mechanic which works as you pass notes on a track (a coaster). The music is very minimal, and a taste not everyone will like, but it does have a charm to it which synergies well with the game. Overall, the difficulty is not hard, but you might find yourself replaying it try and get perfect scores. Also, there are some power-up mechanics, but they don't add much value to the game. Still it's a nifty purchase to add to your library.

    O2Jam U: O2Jam U iTunes Link

O2Jam, a port of the popular PC title, has all the merits to be a successful mobile rhythm game, but fall short. Gameplay is the simple scrolling notes which you tap on beat. Timing, visuals, and overall feel is excellent. However, the menu UI is very clunky and slow. This is partially because of always needing to be online. The game uses a system where you can play songs via points and gems. It may seem nice to be able to play any song, however this freemium model isn't intuitive in the least. Playing a song is great, but getting to that point is a hassle.

DJMAX TECHNIKA Q: DJMAX TECHNIKA Q iTunes Link

DJ Technika Q is a perfect example of an amazing game with a poor release. First off, the download is 2gb. This is partly because every song is downloaded to the device and is merely unlocked when buying dlc. From pure a pure gameplay standpoint, this game is amazing, one of if not the best rhythm games currently out. A vertical bar scrolls left and right and you hit notes as the line passes the button. The music is great, and the charts are excellent (most of them ports). Unfortunately that's where it ends. Buying songs is is incredibly expensive, requiring spending over $100 to unlock all the songs. Plus, in order to play you must always be connected to the internet. As it stands, if you are hardcore, you should definitely pick this up, but for a casual rhythm gamer there are plenty of better options.

    Pop'n Rhythmin:Pop'n Rhythmin iTunes Link

The core gameplay of Pop'n Rhythmin and CrossxBeats is exactly the same. Lines come together and you tap them when they meet. Unlike its counterpart, this game does better is it allows you to actually play the songs whenever you want. Recent updates has made this a top tier rhythm game. There are plenty of songs, super fun gameplay, and a lot of charm. Don't be fooled by the colorful exterior, there is definitely underlying difficulty and it is amazing.

    Rhythm Game Mini Reviews:

    iGoBeat (Pro): https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/igobeat-hd/id396296907?mt=8
At first, this may look like a Jubeat clone, and to be fair it used to be. But after several updates, it came to be a unique game. You are able to create custom beatmaps to play any song you wish, and use several features (like swiping) which are not present in Jubeat. It is a hassle however, as none of the songs are provided. However, if you put time and effort into it, you'll be rewarded with a unique rhythm game experience.

    HipHop Berserker: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hip-hop-berserker/id610634151?mt=8
One of, if not the only rhythm game on ios that sports hip hop tracks. Gameplay can be compared to TheatRhythm, though there are some cool gimmicks to make it stand out. It's on the easier side of rhythm games, and still has a few kinks to work out, but it's fun, and you can't beat the price.

    Upcoming Rhythm Games:

Neon FM: Get an idea of the gameplay via arcade here:

Recently debuting it's arcade release, Neon FM boasts gameplay similar to 5 button mode of Pop'n Music. Based off video clips, the music is mainly electro, covering genres such as techno, glitch, dubstep, drumstep, complextro, and other such sounds which are rare in other ios rhythm games. Definitely one to look forward to.

I don't suppose you know which of these support iPad retina? :p

I'll pick up any of these games if they can meet that one requirement.

Oh good, I was getting worried there for a second. You're missing a ton of Asian arcade/console games like DJMAX and the Hatsune Miku Project Diva series, although stripped-down versions of those are also available on iOS.

Edit: Never mind, you must have meant DJMAX Technika.

  5. Yeah, shame to put so much time into this thread and in the wrong forum.

I like Groove Coaster the best, cause of the catchy music and cool vector graphics. Since it didn't have a dedicated screenshot, here it is...

Nope sorry, I'm on a 2nd gen ipad. I'm sure you could find out with google though.

I've tried Miku Flick, while the music is fun, the gameplay isn't something that I could get into, and the timing windows seemed odd. DJMax Ray is also I good choice I guess I forgot. Unfortunately there's no ipad version, but it still fun. I guess I should also mention O2 Jam. The core gameplay is fun, albeit basic. The menu screen is waaayyy to glitchy though, and that alone is enough to put off playing it.

  7. Miku Flick is unfortunately nothing like the Project Diva series for arcade/consoles/portables. If you get a chance to try out a Project Diva game, definitely go for it. I remember there was a Project Diva arcade machine that was being tested somewhere in LA, but it might be gone now. There's also a small chance that Project Diva F for PS3 might be localized.

I saw, but did not play, Neon FM at Magfest. It looked good. I didn't realize it was coming to iPad! That is pretty cool, but not having the physical controls is going to suck a bit.
