How I Met Your Mother makes every other series look like a joke.

If it's ever I'll have to throw some british shows into the mix like fawlty towers, red dwarf, only fools and horses,Dr Who, monty python, blackadder.

Or if it's something more modern I really like the British version of Being Human.

There are so many good shows though I could keep naming them for hours and picking a winner is beyond me.

The fourth season of Dexter is the greatest twelve hours of television I've ever seen. The third and fifth seasons weren't quite as good but John Lithgow as the trinity killer was so incredibly disturbing it made Silence of the Lambs seem like a Disney movie by comparison.

No show will ever be as good as Twin Peaks.

You've got Community and Arrested Development, so great list. :>
Anyway, since I'm a fan of older British sitcoms too, I can't leave without mentioning Yes, Minister; 'Allo 'Allo or You Rang, M'lord?.

I'll throw some good ol' British TV into the mix as well:

    Torchwood (anyone watching ATM?)
    Luther
    Hustle
    Merlin
Life on Mars (possibly my favourite series ever)

Ah, I forgot the others. I'll probably add to the list once I remember them.

I am! I was shocked to see Wayne Knight on Torchwood, how out of place is that? The gore level is not nearly as high as I was expecting but I believe that's mostly due to it's UK origins. I've watched the first season/series of Life on Mars and I plan to watch the rest of it at some point but it's not the type of show that's conducive to marathon viewings.

The season/series thing gets confusing, here in the US a series is the entire run of a show and not just a yearly run of episodes...

The problem with Dexter is that the titular character is the ONLY good thing about the show. When it's Dexter running around doing his thing it's amazing. Problem is that's only 1/2 of the show, the other half is dedicated to a host of terrible side characters portrayed by crappy actors given shitty sideplots that don't lead ANYWHERE.
Heard great things about Luthur (stars Idris Elba from The Wire).

    YES.
