Still have a number of games out there that not only don't have the retinal update, their icons are still blocky. Edge, iD software games, Crimson Gem Saga, Grand Theft Auto, Civilization. The list goes on... Just griping that's all haha
Yeah. Well most of the time it doesn't bug me much. But retina updates are always appreciated. I think it takes more work than people realize. Graphical assets have to redrawn etc. Like for Crimson Gem Saga, it would take almost as much work as it did when they first made the game for the PSP to redo all the 2D art and sprites in 4x resolution. Not an excuse, but an explanation perhaps.
Speaking as an indie iPhone dev...if you are making the game from scratch it is easy to build retina graphics into it and scale them down for lower resolution devices. The undertaking for updating a game to support retina is like redrawing all the graphics and animations from scratch. In short it is a TON of work. I just got a quote for spritesheets for one of my projects. Basically it worked out to be about $500 per sprite sheet. So I was looking at at least $6000 for art. I am lucky because I am somewhat art inclined and decided to bumble through it myself but if you had to pay that you would think long and hard before doing the update. Probably more cost effective to create a new game.
I can't be the only one that is disturbed by the word's proximity to rectal ... and it would make some sense as well, as the display makes everything that is not optimised look like....
Most developers are doing a simple grab and go. Game development cycle takes several months to a year. Most games are already produced without "Retina Display" support. Unlike major developers like Angry Bird that are raking in revenues, it would not be financially viable for indie developers to reproduce the game's creative if the game is already buried down in the chart. Not much point holding on to a lottery ticket that has already been drawn rather than trying out with a new ticket. Just wait a little more, new products should be coming in with Retina support!
